Match Size & Proportions
Adhere to recommended dimensions: appropriate width, height, and magnification relative to your packaging to guarantee readability.

Maintain Quiet Zones
Leave sufficient blank space around the barcode (typically several times the width of the narrowest bar). This margin is vital for the scanner to correctly locate and interpret the symbol.

Ensure High Contrast
Use strong visual contrast—like black bars on a white or light background—to make scanning reliable under varied lighting.

Opt for Matte Surfaces
Avoid glossy, reflective or transparent materials that can interfere with scanner light. Matte finishes reduce glare and boost scan accuracy.

Select Durable Printing Methods & Materials
Choose label stock and printing methods that withstand your environment (e.g. thermal transfer for abrasion resistance). Ensure the substrate doesn’t degrade readability over time.

Place Barcode Strategically

EAN-13, UPC-A and ITF14 symbologies include a checksum that verifies the rest of the number is correct. Barcodes are made up of 11, 12 or 13 digits plus a checkdigit or 'checksum' at the end to make them UPC (12 digits) EAN (13 digits) and ITF (14 digits).
