One of just over 5,000 ever made, this 1966 Sunbeam Tiger is a rare Anglo-American sports car born from an unlikely partnership: Rootes Group enlisted Carroll Shelby (fresh off the AC Cobra) to shoehorn a Ford 260ci V8 into the compact Sunbeam Alpine chassis. The result was a car producing around 165bhp and capable of cracking 100kmph in under 10 seconds.
This particular example was sold new through Knox Motors in Temple City, California, and spent decades in American hands before making the journey to New Zealand in 2002 for a Sunbeam event. It has since settled into long-term Tauranga ownership, during which it was professionally converted to right-hand drive, compliance documentation included.
The Mediterranean Blue paintwork is described as original, the interior is largely intact, and the underbody presents in notably tidy condition. A photographic record of the conversion work accompanies the car, along with a soft top, tonneau cover, and literature including an excerpt from The Book of Norman, a key reference for the model.
Bidding is now open on Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia June Live Auction. The sale also features The Jim Wilson Collection, a curated selection of vehicles from the Phantom Billstickers’ founder and manager of The Exponents, Jim Wilson. The wider catalogue spans grand touring to everyday classics from Porsches, Ferrari, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Mercedes, Jaguar MK 2, and many more.
