How is New Zealand tracking?

New Zealand is already in an impressive position when it comes to renewable electricity. In 2025, 88.5% of our electricity generation came from renewable sources — the highest share since 1981.

But when we look specifically at solar, there’s still significant room for growth.

That growth is already accelerating. NZ’s installed solar generation capacity jumped from 547 MW in 2024 to 830 MW in 2025 — an increase of 52% in just one year.

And we’re seeing the impact. In the June 2026 quarter, solar generation was 56.2% higher than the same quarter a year earlier, reaching a record 242 GWh. Even more significantly, for the first time, New Zealand generated more electricity from solar than coal over a 12-month period.

Compared with markets such as Australia, where solar has become a much larger part of the electricity mix, NZ is still relatively early in its solar journey. But with more large-scale projects coming online alongside continued residential and commercial adoption, that picture is changing quickly.

☀️ New Zealand may already be a renewable energy country — solar could be one of the next big chapters in that story.
