Please also note that proof of address is required (from utility bills, bank statements etc) to qualify for the free drop (can also be a photo or a digital screenshot). This event is funded for residents of the Maungakiekie local board region (Onehunga, Penrose, Oranga, Royal Oak, One Tree Hill).

And of course, we'd like to give a huge thanks to the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board for supporting this free e-waste event. Their contribution helps keep our community clean, connected, and sustainable. Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou 😄😄

Thanks to Mel Chan-Green from RNZ for covering this reverse vending machine trial - just one of the ways we'll be able to raise money for schools, community organisations and clubs when we have a Container Deposit Return Scheme in Aotearoa, like 32 other countries already enjoy.

Since July, the country’s first Reverse Vending Machine trial at Birkenhead New World has turned 28,000 empty soft drink, juice, wine and beer bottles and cans, into $2,800 dollars for eight local schools.

In the interview Sandy Botterill from FoodStuffs NZ says to get the popular machines rolled out in supermarkets would need the government to implement a container return scheme nationwide.

🙌 The good news is the prep for a successful scheme has been done over the last six years and draft legislation, an updated Waste Act, is ready and just waiting for the government to progress.

♻️ Having Reverse Vending Machines in every supermarket has helped the success of container return schemes in Europe, where they contribute to over 80% of empty drink containers being returned and recycled. For example, Austria has just announced they have saved 80% of drinks bottles and cans from landfill in the first 90 days of their nationwide implementation and is on track to recycle over 90%.
