🇦🇺 Australia Announces $630 Million Investment in Fairer Pay for Healthcare and Community Workers! 💙

The Australian Government is investing $630 million to support fairer pay for over 460,000 workers across health, disability and community services, following Fair Work Commission decisions recognising the historical undervaluation of work in female-dominated industries.

🔹 $630 million in additional funding
🔹 460,000+ workers expected to benefit
🔹 128,000+ organisations across 92 government-funded programs to receive additional funding
🔹 A focus on gender equality, fair wages and recognising the value of essential care work.

The initiative aims to help eligible organisations implement award-related wage increases, retain skilled workers and strengthen essential services across Australia.

👩‍⚕️ Why it matters: Nurses and other healthcare professionals play a vital role in keeping communities healthy. Fair recognition and appropriate remuneration are important steps towards building a stronger, more sustainable healthcare workforce.

Important: The announcement does not mean every nurse will automatically receive a pay rise. Eligibility depends on the applicable award, agreement and funding arrangements.

After a winter of unsafe staffing and nurses speaking out about the pressure on North Shore Hospital’s Emergency Department, Health NZ has agreed to 24 new nursing positions.

That didn’t happen by accident! It happened because NZNO members stood together, spoke up and refused to accept unsafe staffing as the status quo. 24 more nurses means more capacity, more support for staff and, ultimately, safer care for patients.

Wellington Hospital’s emergency department has been operating under Code Red about half the time since March, rising to 84% in August.

Yet nurses say requests for extra staff are still being declined, even when the department is under extreme pressure!

On one recent day, the ED was 10 nurses short and overtime requests were declined.
Nurses are being left to choose between staying beyond their shifts to support their colleagues or going home knowing the department is understaffed.

This November vote for health.

Australia's Department of Home Affairs has introduced Ministerial Directions (MD) 121 & MD 122, placing Healthcare as a Priority 1 sector for skilled visa processing.

✅ Faster processing priority for eligible healthcare applications
✅ Applies to temporary visas such as Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand)
✅ Also applies to permanent and regional visas including 186, 189, 190, 191, 491 & 494

⚠️ Important: This is not a new nursing visa and does not guarantee visa approval. Applicants must still meet all requirements, including:
