A lot of people in top positions at New Zealand Nursing Council have resigned. We think healthcare and nursing workforce reforms will be one of the top priorities for the next government 🤔.

"The council's executive are leaving in droves. This is the direct result of the minister's gutting of the council's board," opines a union representative.

Dear All,

We’ve received quite a few queries and private messages from doctors and specialists from different medical backgrounds, especially from Pakistan, many of whom we assume have at least cleared FCPS Part I, asking about nursing pathways in NZ.

Just to clarify, we’re not career counsellors or immigration advisers. Our knowledge and experience are mainly around nursing and nursing education, so our advice is largely limited to the nursing pathway. For medical registration or immigration matters, it would be better to consult someone specialising in those areas.

Having said that, our first recommendation to any doctor or specialist would be: please try to continue in your own profession if possible. You’ve already invested many years of study, effort and experience to achieve that, so it would be worth exploring medical registration in NZ/Australia before considering a complete career change.

If that pathway isn’t feasible, then Graduate Entry Master of Nursing is another option. It’s a two-year, full-time programme in NZ, and your medical background would definitely be an advantage. Your knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology and clinical practice will help a lot.

However, please remember that nursing is a completely different profession, with its own scope, responsibilities, nursing theories and patient-centred approach. So it shouldn’t be viewed simply as an easier alternative to medicine.

After becoming an RN and gaining the required experience, there are also opportunities to progress into advanced nursing roles, such as Nurse Practitioner or specialist nursing pathways.

So, in short: we recommend first trying to continue in your medical profession; if that isn’t possible, the Graduate Entry Master of Nursing can be a worthwhile alternative. 🇳🇿🇦🇺

🇦🇺 Why Are Most Nurses Placed in Stream B by NMBA ,Australia .

Many internationally qualified nurses (IQNs) ask why they are generally assessed under Stream B instead of Stream A by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

Here's a simple explanation 👇

✅ To qualify for Stream A, an applicant must generally meet BOTH of the following criteria:

1️⃣ Recognised Nursing Qualification

Your qualification must be recognised by your country's nursing regulatory authority (PN&MC in Pakistan).

You must have met all registration/licensing requirements.

2️⃣ Accredited Nursing Education Program

At the time you graduated, your nursing program must have been externally accredited or quality assured by an independent body that meets the NMBA's published standards.

🇵🇰 Pakistan-Specific Context

Most Pakistani nursing qualifications satisfy the first criterion because they are recognised by the Pakistan Nursing & Midwifery Council (PN&MC).

However, the second criterion is where many applications are assessed differently. The NMBA evaluates whether the external accreditation and quality assurance system of the nursing education program meets its published Stream A requirements. As a result, many Pakistani applicants are currently assessed under Stream B.

⚠️ Important: This does not mean your qualification is not recognised or that you cannot become a Registered Nurse in Australia. It simply means your registration pathway is generally through Stream B.

📌 Every application is assessed individually. Your outcome depends on factors such as:

🎓 Your nursing qualification

📅 Your graduation period

📄 The supporting evidence submitted

🏫 The accreditation status of your nursing education program

Today, at the ACN National Nursing Forum, the Federal Health Minister Mark Butler launched Australia’s first National Nursing Workforce Strategy.

This is a milestone for the largest profession in our health and aged care system – and one ACN has advocated for strongly.

Nurses make up more than half of Australia’s health workforce. Until now, planning for that workforce has been ad hoc and fragmented, jurisdiction by jurisdiction. The Strategy changes that, with four priorities – Value, Plan, Design and Deliver – and a commitment to nationally coordinated workforce data and modelling.

This is critical to meting Australia’s healthcare needs: the evidence points to an undersupply of more than 80,000 nurses by 2035 if current trends continue. We are producing graduates without enough new-graduate roles for them to enter, and losing early-career nurses who lack support.

🇳🇿 IMPORTANT NEWS: Immigration New Zealand Removes Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C from the High-Cost Health Conditions List! 🎉

🇳🇿 Immigration New Zealand Update – Good News!

✅ Hepatitis B & Hepatitis C Removed from the High-Cost Health Conditions List

Immigration New Zealand has announced an important change for Resident Visa applicants.

From 3 August 2026, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are no longer included in the High-Cost Health Conditions List. This means applicants with these conditions will no longer be automatically assessed as high-cost during their resident visa health assessment.

🌿 What Does This Mean?

✅ Each applicant will now receive an individual health assessment.

✅ This change reflects significant advances in treatment and supports a fairer, more balanced assessment process.

⚠️ Please Note

This update does not guarantee visa approval. Applicants must still meet all other health, character, and visa requirements set by Immigration New Zealand.

This is a positive step towards a more inclusive immigration system and may benefit many skilled migrants, including internationally qualified nurses, planning to make New Zealand their home. 🇳🇿💙
