🐝 “Dad… there’s a giant maggot on my desk!” 😳
That was the message that started this little investigation at home.
First, my daughter noticed what looked like tiny bits of sawdust appearing on her desk. Then a few small brown pieces started dropping down.
And finally… a big, fat, wriggling white larva landed on the desk.
At this point, the official pest-control procedure was activated:
Step 1: Scream.
Step 2: Call Dad. 😂
Looking above the desk told the real story. There was activity inside the wall/ceiling cavity, with material and developing insects making their way through a small opening.
And this is actually a useful reminder as we head into spring:
Small signs can point to a bigger problem.
Pest problems don't always begin with dozens of insects running around your home. Sometimes the first clue is something very small:
Unexplained debris. A new hole. Scratching. Droppings. A few ants. An unusual insect appearing in the same area repeatedly.
Those are the signs worth investigating before the problem becomes much larger.
As Auckland warms up, we're entering the time of year when wasps, ants, spiders, cockroaches and other insects become increasingly active.
Prevention doesn't mean making your home magically pest-proof. It means reducing the conditions that allow pests to establish themselves and identifying activity early enough to deal with it properly.
So this spring, have a look around your home, particularly around eaves, rooflines, window frames, wall penetrations and other gaps.
And if a mysterious fat white creature suddenly drops onto your desk…
Screaming is optional. Investigation isn't. 😂
