This year’s World Customs Organization certificates were awarded to teams within Customs who created digital led solutions by embracing data culture.

Simon and Scott are a part of Customs’ Child Exploitation Operations Team and have been instrumental in implementing a digital referral system for New Zealand agencies to triage and manage international child exploitation referrals.

This solution has changed the way agencies work together and is far more effective and efficient in helping to identify offenders and remove children from harm.

Tenā kōrua for the very important work you do in protecting New Zealand children.

The intelligence scene started to develop in the 1970s when drugs hit New Zealand.

Customs compiled hand-typed lists of names or ‘alerts’ in a folder called the Black Book, so Customs officers knew who to stop. The success rate boiled down to how many names they could recall at any one time.

Taane, Assistant Customs Officer, shares his story in celebration of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori.

Taane learnt te Reo Māori from a young age, and it has provided him with an academic and intellectual understanding of the world that allows him to stand strong and proud as an indigenous person in Aotearoa and the world.

Taane says that Te Wiki o te Reo Māori signals a wonderful shift in where our country is heading towards oneness.

“It helps in healing our nation. It makes my heart sing when I hear others using Māori language in communication and pronouncing our language properly. I encourage all to make that seed grow and continue to follow its growth."

Lisa, Supervising Customs Officer Outreach to Māori Exporters, is celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori with her Customs whānau.

After completing a 1 year total immersion Te Reo Māori language course last year, a whole new world opened up for her.

“I have always wanted to learn the language. I was raised in the culture of whānau, hui, tautoko, whanaungatanga, but I lost my father at the age of 13 and with that, any interest to learn the reo. However, through all the challenges that life throws at everyone, there is no denying identity."

"He wahine Māori ahau. Being raised on our whenua, at our marae, in the shadows of the safety of our maunga, next to our river that watered out stock and land to sustain us, reminds me of what I have come from, thus what I am a part of. That ability to reminisce, to recount memories, to speak with my elders and wider whānau in te reo Māori, is a blessing like no other. Speaking history helps keep them close, keeps you strong and keeps you connected," says Lisa.
