What are Cannabis Pistils and why are they Important? 🌱

Cannabis pistils are essentially small hair-like strands protruding from the cannabis flower/bud. They are a principal component of the cannabis plant’s reproductive system.

1. Pistils Indicate the Buds’ Quality
In cannabis, pistils are often bright orange or bronze in colour, and if the buds are rich in such pistil hairs, they are considered to be of higher quality. This is because such buds with dense pistils tend to contain more cannabinoids and terpenes (not always, but often).

And as a grower, you can use pistils to improve your buds’ flavour or potency by simply denying it pollination for longer. In an attempt to attract pollinators, the plant will start producing more trichomes, leading to better flavour and potency.

2. They Help Identify the Plant’s S*x
Another importance of pistils for cannabis growers is that they help you identify the s*x of your cannabis plants, which is super important if your goal is a bountiful yield of buds. And the method to do so is quite simple.

All you have to do is look at the nodes for preflowers that contain pistils — if there are pistils, your plant is a female. If not, it’s a male plant and should be removed from your garden immediately to avoid accidental pollination of other female plants.

3. They Help You Know the Right Time for Harvest
Perhaps the most important role of pistils for growers is that they are a pretty accurate way to understand your plant’s maturity. During the late flowering stage, the pistils change colour, which helps you know when to harvest the buds.

At first, the pistils are completely white, but over time, as your plant nears maturity, they start turning orange, brown, or red. This colour change indicates your plant’s maturity and can be a helpful tool to decide when to harvest your buds.

Fun fact Friday 🌱 Did you know? The first documented case of cannabis use dates back to 2800 BC.

Cannabis has a long and colourful history. The use of cannabis originated in central Asia or western China. Cannabis has been used for its alleged healing properties for over a millennia. The first documented case of its use dates back to 2800 BC, when it was listed in the Emperor Shen Nung’s (regarded as the father of Chinese medicine) pharmacopoeia. Therapeutic indications of cannabis are mentioned in the texts of the Indian Hindus, Assyrians, Greeks and Romans. These texts reported cannabis to treat a vast array of different health problems, including arthritis, depression, amenorrhea, inflammation, pain, lack of appetite and asthma.

Cannabis flowers (a.k.a. buds) are the most well-known part of the cannabis plant. The cannabis plants will either have female or male flowers, and the flowering process is how a grower discerns whether the plant is female or male. A flowering female cannabis plant will develop a cola and grow buds. It will also produce cannabis seeds if it is fertilized by a male ma*****na plant. The flowering male plant does not have buds, but develops small pollen sacks at the base of its leaves. Pollinated plants are far less rich in cannabinoids (like THC) so the buds you purchase and enjoy are always unpollinated seedless females. 🌱
