Skilled Migrant Residence changes are coming in August 2026.

INZ has confirmed a new Trades and Technician pathway, more detail on the Skilled Work Experience pathway, and other SMC changes. This could create new residence options for some workers already in NZ.

If you want to know whether these changes may help you, get in touch with VisaMaxNZ.

New Visa rule changes for employers, AEWV holders, partner based visas, residence wage thresholds.

If you:
• Employ migrant workers
• Hold an AEWV
• Want to support your partner or kids
• Are working toward residence

👉 These changes may affect you.

1️⃣ 47 New Occupations Added (Skill Level 1–3)

INZ is recognising 47 additional roles under the new National Occupation List.

This includes updated and clearer chef roles.

Good news for some current AEWV workers - this may help extend visas if moving into a related higher skill role.

2️⃣ Some Roles Now Harder

These move from Skill Level 3 → 4:

• Pet groomer
• Nanny
• Kennel hand

From 9 March:

Higher English required

MSD engagement required

Shorter maximum stay

Partner support becomes harder

If you already have an approved AEWV in these roles, you’re not affected.

3️⃣ Median Wage Increasing to $35/hr
Even though the general AEWV median wage rule was removed last year, many visa settings still link to it.

This affects:
• Green List thresholds
• Partner support income levels
• Residence wage requirements
• Some 5-year stay rules

Partner support thresholds are increasing:
• Skill 1–3 → $28/hr
• Skill 4–5 → $52.50/hr
• Green List → $35/hr

📌 Bottom line:
Wage levels and occupation classifications matter more than ever.

If you’re planning a visa move, job change, partner visa, or residence - check with us before 9 March.

Today is International Migrants Day.

To all those who have crossed oceans, left whānau behind, and started again in Aotearoa, we see you.

Migration takes courage.

May we keep building a country grounded in manaakitanga, fairness, and dignity for all who call this place home.
