Employee or contractor? NZ just made it clearer.

From 21 February 2026, a new "Gateway Test" helps determine whether a worker is a contractor or an employee. A worker qualifies as a contractor if they tick all the boxes: written agreement, free to work for others, flexible hours, ability to subcontract, and no pressure to accept every job.
If the test isn't met, the old legal framework still applies.

Getting this wrong is costly. Misclassification can mean owing back PAYE, holiday pay, and KiwiSaver contributions. Now's a good time to review your contractor agreements and make sure they stack up. 📋

As usual, it's time for the boring (but important) stuff. June & July tax deadlines. These are the most common deadlines for small/medium employers (monthly PAYE) and GST filers. Actual dates can vary by filing frequency and balance date.

Make sure to plan for your tax obligations in your monthly cash flow forecasting. Reach out to your Walker Wayland Accountant if you need to review your forecast and look at options.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting a Pink Ribbon Brunch in support of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, and wow, what a morning it was.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, donated, and helped make it such a special event. Your generosity means the world and goes directly towards funding vital breast cancer research and support here in New Zealand for an incredibly important cause. 🩷

One of the things that catches a lot of small business owners off guard is figuring out how to pay themselves in a way that is sustainable and makes sense from a tax perspective.

The right approach depends on your business structure. If you are a sole trader, your drawings come straight from business income, so managing your tax obligations yourself is essential. If you operate through a company, paying yourself a salary creates clarity and can improve how lenders and others view your financials.

Either way, mixing personal and business money together tends to create confusion and makes it harder to see how your business is actually performing.

We're excited to be hosting our third Pink Ribbon Breakfast on Thursday 21 May in support of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ.

More than 3,700 New Zealand women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. The impact reaches far and wide, so it’s likely we all know someone who has been affected.

Through our Pink Ribbon Breakfast, we're raising funds to help make a real difference and support Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s vision of zero deaths from breast cancer.

If you’re able to, we'd truly love your support. Please feel free to forward to friends and family as well. Every dollar makes a difference. ❤️

Heads up — the ACC Earners' Levy just went up.

From 1 April 2026, the levy increased from 1.67% to 1.75%. It's a small change, but because it comes out of PAYE, employees will notice a slight dip in take-home pay going forward.

If you're an employer, now's the time to check your payroll settings are updated to reflect the new rate! And if you do get a tax bill this year, don't panic. It may simply be a result of the extra pay period in the 2026 tax year, rather than anything being wrong.

Not sure if your payroll is set up correctly, or want help understanding how these changes affect you? Reach out. We've got you. ✉️

Is your cash flow hurting?

Late payments are one of the biggest pressures on small business cash flow. One simple way to get paid faster is to offer more payment options directly from your invoice. Accept payments straight from an invoice and let customers pay the way they want to. This increases the likelihood of on‑time payment and reduces the time you spend chasing outstanding accounts.

Why it matters:

💲86% of customers prefer to pay via credit or debit card
💲Offering options such as credit cards, debit cards, digital wallets, buy‑now‑pay‑later, and direct debit removes common excuses for delayed payment
💲Faster payments mean healthier cash flow and less administrative effort
💲Giving customers a choice isn’t just convenient, it’s a practical way to improve your bottom line.
