One of my mini print shops, Gutenberg+ style. It’s a 1:48 scale set from true2scale that you purchase and assemble. My scene has a few extras I’ve added to complete it. Not hard, fun to make, and it fits nicely into a business card box.

Inkiana is a bit patchy right now (send me your letterpress jobs!) so I decided to try an eye chart, a logical thing with letterpress printers having a variety of type sizes. As you see, wood and metal used, and I’ve built in a secret something into the text. Can you figure it out? A limited number printed, but I haven’t dissed it yet so could run a few more. Some available if you’re interested. Contact me.

With two school holiday workshops to do, and realising Friday was world emoji day, I decided a zine would be a good subject for the kids. They created their own zine by each making an emoji which slotted into the forme I had made up earlier. It was slow, especially having the colours to do on the eight prints, one for each child. The few extra for us and the libraries were a breeze in black. Enjoyed by children and parents who helped. My thanks to Dave Veart and Jane Sanders, my two letterpress assistants.

The journey is nearly over. We fly out from Frankfurt soon. I got to the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz. It’s in a temporary building so not everything is on display. But still good to visit. Heidelberg is great too. The Heidelberg company three legged horse still gallops. It’s fenced off, I hope it’s not coming down. I’ll soo be back to printing, workshopping, playing gigs. The holiday will just be a memory. But a good one 🙏

Today I visited a great printing/paper mill museum. It had lots of working activities, and even an opportunity to be a scribe. Basler Papiermuhle in Basel, Switzerland. The home of Helvetica.

I spent a few hours at the Plantin Moretus museum. This museum in Antwerp tells the story of nine generations of the Plantin family and their printing exploits. They gained contracts to print for royalty, governments, the church and the pope, as well as their own publishing of books on many subjects, science and botany being strong in their catalogue. I especially liked the print shop with a wooden press, an early common type press. Paul the printer could only get rid of me by going off for lunch 🤣

The Inkiana holiday continues. A bunch of things that I thought entertaining or odd on the journey. The map is my planned route to the Museum Plantin Moretus, a famous print museum. Odd signs in Antwerp. Escalator wheel lookalike treadle press! Tree-lined road near our friend’s home in Kent. Cornish pastie making. Our friend’s friend showing off! And a mini arch in Folkstone, UK.

Day three. Excursions from Falmouth. A lot of sea mist on the south coast today. So St Michael’s Mount, Minack Theatre and Lands End were all misted in. On the north coast area it was overcast but clear of mist. St Ives and other villages were charming.
