Most bookkeepers I talk to are already working incredibly hard.

The real issue?
Undercharging.
Overdelivering.
Trying to do everything yourself.

That combination will keep you stuck, no matter how many hours you put in.

At some point, it stops being a workload problem and starts being a capacity problem.

If your bookkeeping business relies on you doing everything, growth will always hit a ceiling.

Not because youโ€™re not capable, but because thereโ€™s only so much of you to go around.

Delegation isnโ€™t a โ€œnice to have.โ€
Itโ€™s how you create space to grow without burning out.

It feels like everyone's been talking about Ai lately, even more than usual, and Claude in particular. Thought you might be interested to know then that Xero has just announced a partnership with Anthropic to integrate Claude directly into Xero.

Xero's automations and Ai in various aspects of their product is pretty good, but their JAX Ai hasn't really lived up to the hype in my opinion, so I'm excited to hear that Claude will soon be backing it. I think this is a great move for Xero.

While standalone Ai products like Claude and ChatGPT are top of mind when it comes to AI right now, I think significant opportunities are coming from existing systems implementing Ai into products we already know and use.

Low energy is one of the quietest drivers of procrastination - and it often goes unnoticed.

When your brain feels foggy, heLow energy is one of the quietest drivers of procrastination - and it often goes unnoticed.

When your brain feels foggy, heavy, or slow to start, itโ€™s not a motivation problem. Itโ€™s not a discipline problem; itโ€™s a capacity problem.

Right now, some bookkeepers are pushing through end-of-year deadlines. Others are heading into their busiest season.

Wherever you are, if youโ€™re tired - youโ€™re not alone. Fatigue changes how your brain works long before you consciously recognise it.

In newsletter, I explore how low energy can disguise itself as procrastination - and how to support yourself when your tank is running low.

January is meant to feel fresh and energisingโ€ฆ but for many bookkeepers, it doesnโ€™t feel that way at all.

If last year was full-on, if you carried responsibility, deadlines, and other peopleโ€™s expectations right through to the end of December, it makes sense if youโ€™ve arrived here feeling a little foggy or tired rather than motivated.

This weekโ€™s blog is about resetting your energy after a big or challenging year.

Imagine: what would it feel like if this year wasnโ€™t about doing more, but about feeling clearer?

This is the time of year when I like to slow down and get really clear on what Iโ€™m aiming for next.

I take time to reflect on the year thatโ€™s been, check in on the goals and intentions I set, and notice what worked (and what didnโ€™t). It doesnโ€™t feel like work at all.

I actually enjoy the process. Thereโ€™s something grounding about it.

A key part of my planning ritual is setting financial targets. Not just revenue, but profit too.
Because yes, revenue matters...but profit is what actually creates security, choice, and breathing room.

Each month, I encourage you to build two simple habits:
โ€ข Set clear financial targets for sales and net profit
โ€ข Be intentional about where those sales are going to come from

When you do this regularly alongside keeping an eye on cashflow and your key reports, it stops money from being something you react to and turns it into something you lead.

Small, consistent financial planning habits make a bigger difference than most people realise.

A new year always brings that quiet question with it...what next?

Not in a rushed, goal-setting frenzy kind of way.

More in a thoughtful, intentional pause to reflect on where youโ€™re heading and what you actually want this next chapter to look like.

Iโ€™ve put together a set of questions designed to help you step back, get clear, and start shaping the year ahead with purpose.

I really encourage you to take a bit of uninterrupted time with them and write your answers down.

Clarity has a way of appearing when we slow things down.

The joy feels bigger.
The fatigue feels heavier.
And the to-do list? Somehow multiplies overnight.

If youโ€™re feeling stretched, foggy, or just plain โ€œdone,โ€ youโ€™re not alone.

December energy is real and it hits even the most organised bookkeepers.

Overwhelm is one of the biggest reasons bookkeepers procrastinate โ€“ and it has nothing to do with capability.

Itโ€™s almost always about capacity.

When your brain is juggling client deadlines, holiday prep, school events, and the mental load of โ€œeverything else,โ€ even the smallest task can feel impossible. Your mind freezes because itโ€™s trying to protect you from decision overload.

In my latest newsletter, I break down why overwhelm and procrastination often appear together, and share practical ways to ease the load when everything feels โ€œtoo muchโ€.

As Global Bookkeeping Week 2025 comes to a close, I canโ€™t help but feel proud of how far our profession has come.

From a small group of like-minded bookkeepers who came together for support, to a thriving nationwide community through ICNZB.

Our profession has evolved into something powerful.

Weโ€™ve built careers with purpose, flexibility, and freedom.

Weโ€™ve helped businesses grow stronger, communities thrive, and families find balance.

So as you wrap up your week, take a moment to reflect on the difference youโ€™ve made, because itโ€™s huge.

To every bookkeeper out there: thank you for showing up with integrity, excellence, and heart.

Letโ€™s keep building this profession together.

โ˜•๏ธ one more time to you, and to the future of bookkeeping.

Thanks to Institute of Certified NZ Bookkeepers for the social templates and for celebrating for all 52 weeks of the year.
