NEW IRD KILOMETRE RATES FOR THE 2025–26 INCOME YEAR

If you use your personal vehicle for business, Inland Revenue has released the latest kilometre rates that can be used to calculate your business vehicle expense claims.

Tier 1 (First 14,000 km travelled by the vehicle during the year)

• Petrol: $1.20 per km
• Diesel: $1.30 per km
• Petrol Hybrid: $0.90 per km
• Electric: $1.22 per km

Tier 2 (Business travel over 14,000 km)

• Petrol: $0.37 per km
• Diesel: $0.38 per km
• Petrol Hybrid: $0.24 per km
• Electric: $0.23 per km

These rates may be used by sole traders, self-employed individuals, and businesses claiming vehicle expenses using the kilometre rate method instead of actual vehicle costs.

Remember: To support your claim, you should keep proper records of your business travel, such as a logbook or mileage records.

Not sure whether the kilometre rate method or actual cost method will give you the better tax result?

BUDGET 2026 UPDATE | GOOD NEWS FOR SMALL INVESTORS

The New Zealand Government has announced changes to the Foreign Investment Fund (FIF) rules in Budget 2026.

➖ The FIF de minimis threshold for overseas investments will increase from $50,000 to $100,000.

This means many Kiwi investors with smaller overseas investments may no longer need to apply complex FIF tax rules — making tax compliance simpler and reducing unexpected tax bills.

In simple terms:
If your overseas investments are under the new threshold, you may have less tax reporting requirements in New Zealand.

This is expected to benefit:
✔️ Small investors
✔️ Migrants with overseas shares
✔️ Everyday Kiwis investing internationally

Budget 2026 also includes other tax changes aimed at simplifying compliance and encouraging investment.

Need help understanding how this affects your tax situation or overseas investments? Send us a message.

“Hi Accountant, nakatanggap po ako ng letter from IRD na need kong mag-file ng IR3 tax return. Bakit po? Ano pong gagawin ko?”

Maraming taxpayers sa NZ ang nakakatanggap ng ganitong letter mula sa IRD at nalilito kung bakit sila required mag-file.

Possible reasons include:
➖ May side hustle or self-employed income
➖Uber or delivery driving
➖Rental property income
➖Multiple income sources
➖Overseas income
➖Untaxed income

Importanteng huwag i-ignore ang letter para maiwasan ang penalties or interest.

Not sure what to do next? We’re here to help.

Fuel stocks update
MBIE publishes the latest information on fuel stocks and shipping every Monday and Wednesday afternoon.

As of 11:59 pm Sunday May 17, total stock levels were down for petrol and diesel, and up for jet fuel.

These movements reflect normal shipping patterns and routine variations and are consistent with what we would expect even without the conflict in the Middle East.

Overall fuel stocks remain well above minimum requirements and within normal ranges, with regular shipments continuing to arrive as expected.

Following several large shipments in late April, total stocks will likely decrease over the coming weeks, before more ships arrive to replenish those stocks — as was seen between late March and mid-April.

Fuel importers have expressed good levels of confidence in their supplies, with confirmed orders to late June, and planned orders extending into August.

MBIE publishes the latest information on current fuel stocks every Monday and Wednesday afternoon.

Tanong ni Juan:
“Hello IRD, ang laki pala ng tax due ko sa aking Income Tax Return. Pwede po ba na installment ang bayad?”

Nagulat sa laki ng tax bill after filing your Income Tax Return? Hindi ka nag-iisa!

Good news — in many cases, may option ang payment arrangement with the IRD kung hindi kayang bayaran agad in full. Pero mahalagang maagapan ito at huwag balewalain ang due date dahil maaaring magkaroon ng penalties at interest.

Know your options and get proper tax advice to avoid unnecessary stress and penalties.

If you’re unsure what to do with your tax obligations, we’re here to help! Send us a message and let’s discuss your situation.
