Baby carriers are safe for small babies, but just like a pram or a capsule, you need to know the things YOU need to do to make sure your baby is safe. Can they breathe? Is their chin off their chest? Is there fresh air over their face so they aren’t breathing in stale air which has had all the oxygen used up? Will they overheat? Is there no layer of fabric over their head space because even a thin muslin will trap heat in and could overheat them (same for a pram or a capsule)? Are you aware how they are doing, by leaving your hand resting lightly on their back, so you know that they are breathing, coz you can feel their back rising and falling? Baby carriers are a life-saver for a parent, giving you back your arms, and your freedom, but never forget, YOU are still in charge of your baby’s safety. It’s easy to learn what to do, check in with a consultant like me, or a babywearing group if you want to make sure you’ve got this sorted.
