What does 'Made in NZ' mean today?
Next week during I am exhibiting a group of designers that tell a story about making in New Zealand.
Having visited other Design Weeks in Europe, and experiencing how inspiring they can be, I asked myself - what could I do to bring some of that spirit to the Design Week here?
For me the answer was to put together an exhibition of new work from Aotearoa to capture what I believe is a special moment in the evolution of our own design identity, and to tell the stories of what make our designs unique to an international market.
For the ‘Made in NZ’ exhibition I have curated 8 designers who come from very different backgrounds, and who have created work using a diverse set of processes – from furniture to ceramics to lighting to textiles – all made here.
The big question is, what unites the work? Is it a sense of proportion and palette informed by our wild landscape? Is it the scarcity of resources and skills that drives us to create simple, humble forms? Is it our youth as a nation and freedom from historical style that gives us a raw and naïve sensibility? Is it a connection to handcraft and reverence for local materials that comes from Te Ao Māori? Is it our easy-going, lightness of spirit that results in clever or ingenious solutions?
I think how we make things is strongly connected to the answers.
The exhibition ‘Made in NZ’ sets out to test these hypotheses. I want to tease out, discuss and critique what about these pieces of work might represent a New Zealand design identity. So, let’s celebrate at , then take it to the world and show just what we are capable of!
