DID YOU KNOW?

New Zealand's squash market is growing fast, and it can't get enough supply. Total imports of fresh and chilled squash jumped over 60% between 2022 and 2023, reaching 900,808 kg, driven by rising demand for healthy, plant-based foods. Tonga emerged as the standout Pacific performer, more than doubling its export value from NZD 326,147 to NZD 826,383 in a single year.

But perhaps the most telling insight came directly from New Zealand importers: they currently bring in around 50 tonnes of squash during the October/November peak season and have the capacity to take 100 tonnes, if the supply were available. That's a gap no one is filling.

For Pacific Island exporters who can deliver consistent volumes and meet biosecurity requirements, squash isn't just a vegetable; it's an open door into one of New Zealand's fastest-growing fresh produce categories.

DID YOU KNOW?

Fiji is quietly exceeding expectations in New Zealand's papaya market. While the Philippines dominates by volume shipping 621,393 kg in 2023. Fiji consistently commands the highest price per kg of any supplier, reaching NZ$4.54 in 2024 compared to the Philippines' NZ$2.78. That price premium reflects what quality and proximity can achieve.

Together, the Philippines and Fiji supply nearly 99% of all fresh papaya imported into New Zealand, with total volumes peaking at 791,790 kg in 2023. Beyond fresh fruit, the preserved papaya market is also growing up 55% in import value between 2021 and 2024, spanning juices, purees, dried snacks, and baby food.

For Pacific exporters who can meet New Zealand's biosecurity standards, papaya isn't just some fruit, it's a multi-category opportunity with a proven price advantage already built in. As New Zealand's appetite for tropical, plant-based, and functional foods continues to grow, papaya grown in the Pacific is well placed to be part of that story. The market is there. The question is who fills it?

DID YOU KNOW? EGGPLANT EXPORTS FROM FIJI

Fiji has built something quietly remarkable in New Zealand's eggplant market - near-total dominance. Every year from 2021 to 2024, Fiji supplied virtually 100% of all imported eggplant into New Zealand, with import values climbing steadily from NZ$1.15 million to NZ$1.79 million.

Even more telling is the price story: eggplants from Fiji fetched NZD$6.86 per kg in 2024, up from NZ$3.99 in 2021 a 72% price increase in just four years. That's not luck; it's the reward for consistent quality. Domestically, a single glasshouse operation near Auckland supplies around 80% of locally grown eggplant, leaving off-season windows wide open for Pacific exporters. Add growing consumer demand for plant-based ingredients from baba ganoush to vegan burger patties and the case for expanding Pacific eggplant exports to New Zealand has never been stronger.

DID YOU KNOW? MARKET INSIGHTS, CHILLI

The market insights documents are now available on our website. These documents are designed to provide all the market access information and protocols to be placed in the New Zealand market.

Did you know? New Zealand spent nearly NZ$5 million importing crushed and ground chilli in 2024 and this figure is only growing.

Spain now dominates almost half the market by volume, but here's what the numbers quietly reveal: Fiji's fresh chilli commands NZ$8.78 per kg, the highest price of any supplier in 2024, outpacing Australia at NZ$4.64 and Vietnam at NZ$3.49.

Beyond the kitchen, chilli's active compound capsaicin is driving demand in pharmaceuticals, skincare, and even pest repellents meaning Pacific exporters aren't just selling spice, they're tapping into a multi-industry ingredient.

With New Zealand's appetite for bold, plant-based flavours growing across sauces, snacks, and ready meals, Pacific Island producers who can deliver consistent, premium-grade chilli are sitting on a serious commercial opportunity.
