The government has announced a review into solar panel installation, which it describes as a "red tape nightmare".

Regulation Minister David Seymour says the aim is to make New Zealand the simplest place in the developed world to install solar.

Tim Dudek, who owns installation company Solar Craft and has 16 years in the business, told Morning Report New Zealand's standards have only just been changed to meet those of Australia, and demand has increased around 400 percent in the past few months.

Interesting development for the solar industry today.

The Government has announced a review into the regulations and approval processes around residential and small-scale solar installations.

While there’s always room to improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary delays, it’s also important New Zealand maintains strong electrical and safety standards as solar adoption grows.

In our experience, the biggest barrier to solar uptake isn’t simply compliance — it’s still the upfront investment, and balancing financial return with sustainability goals for households and businesses.

Good system design, quality workmanship, and proper checks matter. Solar is a long-term infrastructure investment, and customer confidence depends on installations being done safely and correctly.
