Fun fact for Friday. There are a set of hard drives floating some 300km up in the ISS containing digital versions of DNA from the great minds of our generation, noted historical achievements and other critical information that may be used to rebuild "life" should Earth be destroyed.

As phones replace cameras for a lot of people we are seeing an increasing number of Micro SD cards come in for data recovery and people are always amazed at what actually makes up the internals of these cards. As in the above image is a failed 16GB Sandisk card we are mapping now for recovery. So much engineering in such a small piece of plastic!

Here's a snap of what only a few hours of salt water will do to circuitry. We see a fair amount of salt water damaged devices through our labs with NZ having such high boat ownership and so many of us living in coastal areas. A customer came to us this week with a laptop that had salt water damage when his dinghy took a wave over the bow as he headed out to his boat. Time really isn't on your side with salt water and electronics but he got it to us quickly, and we got to the circuitry in time, to be able to complete a full recovery from the drowned laptop. Our latest iPhone recovery involved a little more than the average data recovery tools. Inspection cameras to locate, and then at least 5 inches of concrete had to be broken through to access 'pipes' where an iPhone 6 had lay for 48 hours after being flushed down the toilet. Needless to say it was not in the best shape. Our techs worked their magic though and within 24 hours the customer had all his data back in hand.
