Early this year, FCG New Zealand commenced a study with the World Bank to assess the Scope, Scale and Impacts of Marine Pollution from Key Blue Economy Sectors in the Pacific Islands. This includes assessing plastic and non-plastic solid waste in the fisheries, tourism, and maritime transport sectors.

The FCG New Zealand team is currently carrying out consultations to collate available waste data as the basis of economic and policy analysis. The results of the Study will generate knowledge to inform decision making, policies, and investment planning for reducing the impacts of blue economy sector waste in Pacific Islands.

FCG New Zealand has kickstarted the Pacific Value Chain Analysis Assignment, a value chain study working across the Pacific and Papua New Guinea. This World Bank funded study will analyse the Pacific/PNG coconut and fisheries sector value chains, with a primary focus on value addition, product upgrading, market diversification and job creation.

The ongoing impact of COVID-19 in the Pacific Region has re-emphasised the need to accelerate economic transformation in the region to create jobs, foster prosperity and increase resilience. This notably includes enhancing trade integration and competitiveness, developing value chains, accessing new markets, and upgrading products. The outputs of this study are intended to guide investment and policy decisions of Pacific Island Countries as well as for regional organizations, and any other interested stakeholders.

Stay tuned to follow how we progress with the assignment over the upcoming months.
