Some of the most profitable businesses I know don’t have beautiful branding.

Their websites are a bit clunky.
Their decks aren’t going to win design awards.
Their Instagram grid isn’t perfectly curated.

But…

They know exactly who their customer is.
They solve a problem people will actually pay to solve.
They deliver.
They retain customers.
They generate revenue.

And I think we’re about to see this distinction become even more important with AI.

Because it has never been easier to look like a business.

In an afternoon, AI can help you create a logo, website, pitch deck, content strategy, social posts and a very convincing brand.

But none of those things mean you have a business.

A beautiful brand with no customer insight is decoration.

A slick AI-generated website with no demand is a website.

A thousand pieces of content without a compelling proposition is just… a lot of content.

I LOVE design. I’ve spent a huge part of my career in human-centred design, innovation and experience.

But design isn’t about making things pretty.

It’s about making things work better for humans.

So perhaps the question isn’t:

“How do we make this look better?”

It’s:

Does anyone want this?
Does it solve something meaningful?
Will they pay for it?
Will they come back?
And does the experience live up to the promise?

Brand matters.

But the business underneath it matters more.

AI can make almost anything look polished now.

It can’t fake product-market fit.
