We talk a lot about high performance. But are we talking enough about the pressure behind it? And what about the human beneath it all?

After more than 20 years in the mental health sector and 12 years as a psychologist, I’ve seen how stress, trauma and our patterns of responding to pressure can shape the way we think, communicate and relate to others.

These patterns don’t disappear when we walk into the workplace.

They can show up as people pleasing, avoiding conflict, struggling with boundaries, reacting under pressure or finding it impossible to switch off.

And in teams, these patterns can affect trust, communication and performance.

This is why I’m passionate about bringing psychology and applied neuroscience into leadership and organisational settings.

Through Rise Coaching & Consultancy, I work to help leaders and teams better understand the brain under pressure, navigate difficult conversations and build healthier, higher-performing workplaces.

Because supporting people and achieving results shouldn’t be competing priorities.

If you lead a team, what do you think is the biggest challenge people face when working under pressure?

I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Cognitive Reframing: The Leadership Skill That Changes What’s Possible

Our brain literally filters out reality based on our belief system - that’s how important changing our beliefs are especially when it comes to leading ourselves and others.

Our beliefs influence what we pay attention to. And what we pay attention to can influence the choices we make, the actions we take, and ultimately the goals we achieve.

This is where cognitive reframing becomes a powerful leadership practice. It’s not about ignoring reality or forcing positivethinking. It’s about pausing and asking: “Is there another way I can look at this?”
Instead of:
❌ “This isn’t working.”
→ “What can we learn and adjust?”
❌ “I’m not capable of this.”
→ “What capability do I need to develop?”
❌ “They’re resisting change.”
→ “What might they need to engage with the change?”
❌ “We failed.”
→ “What has this taught us about our next step?”

The circumstances may not immediately change. But changing the frame can change the questions you ask, the opportunities you notice, and the actions you take. And that matters when you’re leading yourself, your team, or an organisation towards a meaningful goal.

The goal isn’t to think positively. It’s to think more intentionally.

💬 What’s one situation you could reframe this week?
If you’re working through a leadership challenge and want to explore a different perspective, get in touch - I’d love to start a conversation.

I was unwell today so decided to stay home and rest as much as possible. I run a charity for young mothers and we meet in person on a Wednesday. Thankfully because I have raised up some leaders in our space, I didn’t need to attend today’s session.

That got me thinking about my leadership legacy. How it isn’t just about me and what I achieve. It’s who I develop along the way. It’s about who becomes better because I led them. And about creating the space for people to step forward, take ownership, make decisions, learn from mistakes and discover their own leadership voice.

The goal isn’t to create people who need me more. It’s to create people who are confident enough, capable enough and courageous enough to lead without me.

I believe that our greatest leadership legacy is so much bigger than the results we’ve achieved. It’s the leaders we’ve raised along the way.

So here are two questions for you. Do you have a person you are intentionally developing into a leader? And is there one thing you believe leaders should do more of to raise the next generation of leaders?

Do you give yourself permission to pause during a busy workday?
Not a long break.
Not a coffee run.
Just a 30-second micro-pause to breathe, reset, and refocus.

What does your pause look like?
💬 Take a breath
🚶 Step away from the screen
☕ Make a drink
🧠 Simply stop and reset

What’s your go-to micro-pause?

Share yours in the comments - you might give someone else an idea for their next reset👇

If you’re someone who finds it difficult to slow down, you’re always working, and your mind is constantly thinking about the next thing…this is for you.

High performance isn’t about being “on” all the time. It’s about learning how to perform at your best without burning yourself out.

A few reminders:

✨ Schedule recovery with the same commitment you give your work.

✨ Focus on what genuinely moves the needle, not simply staying busy.

✨ Create boundaries around your working hours.

✨ Take intentional pauses before your energy forces you to.

✨ Protect your sleep and physical wellbeing.

✨ Give yourself permission to have time where you’re not achieving anything.

✨ Remember: sustainable performance beats short bursts of intensity.

One of the biggest mindset shifts for high performers is recognising that rest isn’t the opposite of productivity. It’s part of performance.

You don’t need to slow down because you’re not capable of doing more. Sometimes, you need to slow down so you can keep doing your best work for the long term. The goal isn’t to see how long you can keep going. The goal is to build a way of working where you can perform, recover, and perform again consistently.

So, what would change for you if you stopped seeing slowing down as a weakness and started seeing it as a performance strategy?
