How do New Zealand business leaders feel ahead of the looming New Zealand election? The predominant mood, according to our recent Pre-Election Business Survey, is cautious optimism about the economy and a desire for stability although there are concerns about the security risks posed by AI – and they’re not keen on the return of a Labour government.

“To get back into the game, Labour needs to be seen to recognise that businesses of all types are the lifeblood of the economy, not just a source of taxation income,” says Mike Rudd, Baker Tilly Staples Rodway Auckland head of tax.

Last Friday, the Auckland tax team got their hands dirty making pottery at The Clay Centre. They had a great afternoon, making a bit of a mess and spending time together outside of the office. There were some surprisingly good results and a few that, according to their makers, probably won’t be making it onto the mantelpiece 😊

Our Auckland office brought a bit of London to its Women in Business event last week.

The evening explored all things London – from food and fashion to lifestyle and culture – but most importantly, leadership.

British Consul-General Sophie Warner-Fog and Baker Tilly Staples Rodway Auckland Director Annette Azuma discussed how leadership differs across cultures, and what we can learn from one another.

Sophie described UK leadership as pragmatic, with a strong focus on finding common ground, and said diversity is also increasingly seen as a strength.

She finds accessibility is a key advantage in New Zealand. Our relatively small business community can mean fewer layers between leaders and their teams, with more emphasis on relationships than hierarchy.

There are lessons in both directions. New Zealand could look to the UK for its international networks, diverse perspectives and confidence in articulating ambition. The UK could take inspiration from New Zealand’s accessible leadership, flatter structures and willingness to experiment with a “Number 8 Wire” mindset.

They also discussed Japanese leadership (Annette leads Baker Tilly Staples Rodway’s “Team Japan” and Sophie had a five-year posting in Tokyo) and its culture of laying the groundwork and building consensus. That process can take longer, but it can also create a strong sense of collective responsibility.

It was a great evening of conversation, culture and connection, with plenty of ideas to take away about leadership and work across cultures.
