The Mighty Oak. This little guy resides in the Fôret des Bertranges in the Burgundy region of France. It will not be considered for harvest until it reaches a minimum of 150 years.

Outside of natural disasters, it's guaranteed long life is thanks in part to the French sustainable forest management plan. The plan was put in place in 17th century, under Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683) who served as the Secretary of State for the Navy under the Sun King, Louis XIV.

As SoS of the Navy, Colbert realized the French forests would suffer from continued exploitation, and potentially put the country at risk, due to limited wood supplies for building ships. In countering the perceived risk, he convinced the King to prioritize a sustainable forest management plan, to which the King eventually agreed.

In 1669 Colbert got to work and took comprehensive stock of France's forests. For over 350 years, the French have sustainably managed their forests to include strict regulations around harvesting and prohibiting the tramping of young trees and seedlings in the process.

Although the Navy no longer uses wood to build ships, the enduring forest management programs has been an extraordinary and enduring gift.

The protections in place help to ensure this little guy will endure far more seasons than any human and the forest will remain healthy; a living and breathing entity that will continue to provide for generations to come.

The Greek proverb rings true: "A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit." 🌳

Oak influence is one of the most important components of making great wine, and is talked about profusely in describing wines, yet it is often the least understood element. We get it!

We don't generally have a barrel of wine sitting in our kitchen and unless you're a winemaker, 'tasting barrels' every day.

So this is for all you wine lovers, crafters, makers, marketers, and science minds, and anyone with a general interest. We look forward to sharing our knowledge, expertise, and experience in the wine barrel world....And hearing your questions and comments.
