The historic McKellar House apartments were demolished after the Feb 11 Christchurch earthquake, and the client is rebuilding a single executive residence within the existing Parkbridge apartment grounds with views to Hagley Park. The brief included generous living areas and bedrooms and contemporary architecture that respects the historic flavour of old McKellar House but serves as a contemporary home for modern life. Visual and physical connection to the Parkbridge shared grounds and Hagley Park were key drivers in the building’s planning and form. Bedrooms and living areas are located over three levels connected by a dramatic triple height entry and circulation space.

Currently under construction, the house is due for completion in December 2015.

This house was inspired by its bush-covered, north facing site, amongst a central Auckland suburb. The house sits long and low across the site, making the most of its north aspect, and native bush reserve that fringes the house on its south side. The house serves a young, busy family and was designed to feel welcoming, relaxed and approachable.

A variety of timbers were chosen to finish the house: dark stained, cedar weatherboard cladding was chosen for durability, quality, sophistication and vertical lines to complement the surrounding trees. Vitex timber has used on the decks and floors, the latter finished with wood oil to bring out the timber’s soft caramel tones. Grooved, painted plywood sheets were used to line the skillion roof, to read with the vertical weatherboards outside and negative joint detailing between sheets for extra effect.

This collection of boat-shed inspired buildings overlooks Golden Bay, near Abel Tasman National Park. Expanses of timber decking connect them and extend the architecture to the landscape and views. Materials were carefully chosen for a beach house aesthetic, low maintenance, and easy holiday living, such as painted board and batten cladding, open trusses, corrugated steel ceilings, stainless steel modular kitchen units and painted plywood floors. Every room is designed for connection to the outdoors and the views, including the bathrooms which look through the bedrooms and out to Farewell Spit across the Bay

Perched on the edge of the Shotover Valley, this house takes traditional architectural lines and materials and explores them with contemporary purpose and detailing. The house nestles quietly into the surrounding landscape, without compromising connection to spectacular views and sun. Interior spaces have been planned and connected with grown-up and extended family in mind: there are opportunities for communal gathering as well as private retreat, in spaces designed for multiple functions and uses.
