Did you know timber piles can look perfectly fine above ground but be deteriorated below ground?
This is one of the reasons what's happening underneath your house matters. 🏠
A timber pile can appear solid and healthy where it's visible, while the section below ground level or around the ground-line zone may have deterioration that isn't obvious from a quick visual inspection.
🔎 Things that can contribute to deterioration include:
💧 Moisture — prolonged exposure to damp conditions can contribute to timber decay.
🌧️ Poor drainage — water collecting around the foundations can create an unfavourable environment.
🪵 Ground-line deterioration — the area around ground level can be particularly important when assessing older timber piles.
🐜 Borer and insect damage — internal or concealed damage may not always be immediately obvious.
⚠️ Age and condition — older foundations should be assessed based on their actual condition rather than appearance alone.

Don't judge a timber pile by what you can see above the ground.
