From 5 October 2026, the Parent Resident Visa Category will move to a new hybrid selection model. Most Expressions of Interest (EOIs) will be selected in date order, while a smaller number will continue to be selected through a ballot.

The next Parent Resident Visa selection draw will proceed as scheduled on 11 August 2026 under the current settings. The first selection under the new hybrid model is scheduled for 10 November 2026.

The changes are intended to provide families with greater certainty and a clearer pathway through the process.

If you already have an Expression of Interest (EOI) in the pool, you do not need to do anything. Your EOI will automatically move into the new system, and we will provide more information before the changes take effect about what this means for you.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: PARENT RESIDENT VISA CHANGES

Planning to bring your parents to New Zealand?
Here’s an important update you need to know!

The New Zealand Government has announced changes to the Parent Resident Visa Category, with a new hybrid EOI selection system starting 5 October 2026.

What’s changing?
✅ 90% of EOIs will be selected in date order — generally prioritising older EOIs.
🎟️ 10% of EOIs will be selected through a ballot, giving newer applicants an opportunity to be selected.

📌 The annual allocation remains 2,500 Parent Resident Visas per financial year.

📅 Important dates:
• 11 August 2026 – Next selection under the current system
• 5 October 2026 – New hybrid system takes effect
• 10 November 2026 – First selection under the new hybrid system

💡 Already have an EOI?
You do not need to submit a new EOI. Current EOI holders will automatically transition to the new system.

Another important change is that EOIs will no longer automatically expire after 2 years. Applicants will need to confirm every 2 years that they wish to remain in the pool and ensure their information is up to date.

⚠️ Please note: The eligibility requirements for the Parent Resident Visa remain unchanged. The changes mainly affect how EOIs are selected for an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
