🛡️ Look what’s been doing the rounds in Northland today! 💙🏉

There’s been plenty to celebrate around our Kerikeri and Waipapa teams following the Taniwha’s incredible 36–12 victory over Canterbury last night to bring the Ranfurly Shield back to Northland.

And it turns out we have our own special connection to the Taniwha!

Derek, one of our truck drivers from our Kamo yard, is a former Taniwha mascot and still has this brilliant replica Shield. Naturally, after last night’s historic win, it had to come out for a victory lap, with Phoenix team members and customers getting in on the celebrations. 😄🛡️

It was a huge night for Northland rugby, with the Taniwha recording their first win over Canterbury in 27 years and their first win in Christchurch in 39 years.

Safe to say there are a few happy Northlanders around today!

Congratulations Taniwha. The Shield is coming home! 💙🙌

💚 Supporting initiatives that deliver both environmental and social impact is something we're deeply passionate about at Phoenix. Kai Ika is a brilliant example of how innovative thinking can create meaningful change for our communities while making better use of our precious natural resources. We're proud to support the team behind this incredible kaupapa and look forward to seeing its impact continue to grow.👏 Ngā mihi to everyone involved in making it happen.

So far in 2026, we've shared enough kaimoana to create more than 10,000 family meals.

It hasn't been an easy year so far, for pretty much all of us. And yet here we are, working together, getting it done. Beautiful fresh ika, like these Tāmure heads and frames, being shared week after week. Enough to create 50,000 individual meals so far this year.

Massive thanks in particular to Moana New Zealand, Rutherford & Bond and King Toyota, Hutt City Council, Phoenix Recycling Group, Plimmerton Boating Club and Enviro NZ for their commitment to help keep the fish heads flowing.

And to everyone who’s helping power the project, share the treats and turn them into nutritious Kai.

Together is the way and together is the outcome. And the mid-winter sun is shining for another beautiful week of sharing and enjoying kaimoana.

We give thanks.

✨ Matariki is a time to pause, reflect on the year that's been, reconnect with those around us, and look ahead with hope for the future. It also reminds us of our connection to the environment and the importance of caring for the world we share.

As we celebrate the Māori New Year, we wish all our customers, partners, and communities a safe and happy Matariki.

A reminder that all Phoenix Recycling Group yards are closed on Friday for the public holiday. We'll be back open as usual on Saturday.

If you're planning to tackle some household, garage or farm clean ups, why not give unwanted scrap a new life through recycling? We'll pay you for a wide range of materials, including:

🔸 Aluminium
🔸 Brass
🔸 Copper
🔸 Lead acid batteries
🔸 Stainless steel
🔸 Steel and general scrap metal

Every load recycled helps recover valuable resources and supports a more sustainable future. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

🌟 Happy Matariki from the Phoenix Recycling Group team!

We’re proud to share that The Kai Ika Project’s Cans for Kai initiative, developed by Phoenix Recycling in partnership with LegaSea, was recently nominated for a WasteMINZ + ALGA Award for Excellence.

The programme shows how everyday recycling can create meaningful social and environmental impact. By collecting and recycling aluminium cans, Cans for Kai helps fund the Kai Ika Project, which redistributes fish heads and frames that might otherwise go to waste to communities across Aotearoa.

It’s a great example of a circular economy in action, where one waste stream helps unlock value from another while supporting local communities.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated cans and supported the initiative. Your efforts are helping reduce waste, maximise the value of our shared resources, and make a real difference for families and communities around New Zealand.

📚♻️ Great to see another convenient battery recycling option now available for Canterbury residents.

In partnership with Waimakariri District Council, Phoenix Recycling Group has helped launch a new battery drop off point at Kaiapoi Library, making it easier for people to safely recycle used household batteries and keep them out of landfill. The trial aims to reduce fire risk, recover valuable materials, and encourage responsible battery disposal within the community.

Batteries should never be placed in household rubbish or recycling bins, as they can cause fires when damaged or compacted during collection and processing. Residents can drop off household batteries up to 5kg, including power tool batteries, button batteries, and embedded batteries from items such as toys and vapes.

A big thank you to Waimakariri District Council for supporting this initiative and helping make battery recycling more accessible for local communities. 👏🔋

A new drop off centre in Kaiapoi aims to encourage residents to dispose of their old batteries safely.
