Flat batteries? 🔋♻️

Christchurch residents can safely recycle household batteries using battery recycling units supplied by Phoenix, and installed at Christchurch City Council's EcoDrop Resource Recovery Centres and the EcoShop.

The purpose built units are designed to safely collect household batteries while reducing the risk of fires, featuring built in fire resistance, heat detection and continuous monitoring 🔥🛡️

From dead toy batteries to flat remotes and everyday household batteries, recycling helps keep hazardous materials out of landfill and supports a more sustainable future for our communities 🌏

Phoenix also carries out the collections from these units, ensuring batteries are transported and recycled safely through approved downstream partners so valuable resources can remain in circulation 🔄♻️

The receptacles are located at the Parkhouse, Metro and Styx Mill EcoDrop Resource Recovery Centres, along with the Blenheim Road EcoShop. Simply drop your used batteries into one of the designated units and Phoenix will ensure they are responsibly processed.

Batteries should never go in household rubbish or recycling bins. If you have larger or specialist batteries, including EV or commercial batteries, we can help with those too.

We’re proud to be supporting Christchurch City Council’s efforts to help Christchurch recycle batteries the right way 💚

Small action. Big impact.

Phoenix Recycling Group is attending the 2026 WasteMINZ conference in Wellington this week ♻️🌏

Held under the theme “Mā te mahi tahi – 'Driving impact through collaboration', the conference brings together leaders from across the waste, resource recovery and contaminated land sectors to explore how partnerships and shared knowledge can help shape a more sustainable future for Aotearoa.

It’s been fantastic connecting with industry peers, customers and stakeholders, while also showcasing Phoenix’s growing work across battery recycling, resource recovery and circular economy solutions.

Our GM of Sustainability & Product Stewardship, Jasmine Faulkner, spoke at the Women in the Industry Breakfast panel discussion alongside an inspiring group of industry leaders. The session highlighted the importance of representation, collaboration and encouraging more women into the sector 👏

If you’re attending WasteMINZ 2026, come and say hello to the Phoenix team at our expo stand!

⚙️♻️ Phoenix Recycling Group was proud to attend TechStep 2026, connecting with the next generation of innovators, problem solvers, and future industry leaders.

Our interactive e-waste display gave students the opportunity to get hands on with real electronic equipment, dismantle devices, explore internal components, and learn more about responsible recycling and resource recovery. From hard drives and motherboards to printers and electronics, it was fantastic to see so much curiosity and enthusiasm.

At Phoenix, we believe education and engagement are essential to building a more sustainable future. Events like TechStep help showcase the importance of the circular economy while also highlighting the wide range of careers and opportunities available across recycling, sustainability, technology, and resource recovery industries.

A huge thank you to the organisers and everyone who stopped by to chat with the team and get involved. We loved being part of such an inspiring event. 🙌

Big news for the future of battery recycling in New Zealand! 🔋♻️

Phoenix Recycling Group is excited to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sumitomo Corporation to undertake a pre-feasibility study into the potential establishment of battery black mass production facilities right here in New Zealand.

As EV adoption continues to accelerate and battery volumes grow across the region, this initiative marks an exciting step toward strengthening New Zealand’s battery recycling capability and supporting a more circular future.

The study will explore opportunities to recover valuable materials from end of life batteries and help build more sustainable, resilient recycling pathways for the future. 🌏

We’re proud to be working alongside Sumitomo on an initiative that could help shape the future of battery recycling in New Zealand.

🔋 At Phoenix, downstream transparency is not optional, it is essential. ♻️

We are committed to providing clear, verifiable downstream information and will continue to support and facilitate full transparency for all suppliers. ✅

Following recent reports emerging from Australia, Phoenix Recycling Group would like to reassure all our suppliers that every battery received by Phoenix is processed through certified downstream partners for complete and responsible recycling. 🌏

The only exception is damaged Lithium Batteries ⚠️ which cannot currently be exported due to the safety risk they pose during transportation. However, Phoenix can support suppliers with safe handling and disposal solutions for these materials. 🤝

As one of New Zealand’s leading battery exporters, Phoenix holds approved Basel Convention EPA permits covering a quota of 3,000MT of Other Waste Batteries, including Alkaline, Lithium, and Nickel based batteries. All batteries handled by Phoenix are exported to authorised recovery facilities operating to recognised international standards. 🌱

Our public recycling map is currently the only map in New Zealand that provides verified downstream recycling information for public battery drop off locations, giving suppliers and consumers confidence that listed recycling pathways are legitimate and independently verified. ✅
