Sales & marketing — beware being “loud everywhere, clear nowhere”

Australian retail-media research highlights a problem worth stealing for your own marketing thinking: brands can spend up to 60% of their week simply pulling fragmented campaign data together, while running activity across multiple retail-media platforms.

The lesson for a smaller business is even simpler. Being on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, email, Google and everywhere else isn’t necessarily a strategy if each channel is saying something different.

Consistency creates memory. Activity alone creates noise!

Australian brands are spreading retail media budget across more networks than ever. The problem isn't the spend. It's that no one can see across it.

Auror founder puts $30,000 behind the next generation

A nice New Zealand business story this morning. Auror co-founder Phil Thomson is donating $30,000 to support future entrepreneurs at the University of Auckland — where the retail-crime technology business itself began. Auror has since grown into an international company tackling retail crime.

Retail crime-fighting company Auror got its start at the University of Auckland. Now co-founder Phil Thomson is gifting $30,000 to help the next

Stop reporting activity without conversion

If a salesperson tells you:

“I made 40 calls this week.”

the next question should be:

“And what did those 40 calls produce?”

Track the chain: contacts → meaningful conversations → appointments → proposals → decisions → sales.

That immediately shows where the real problem sits. Lots of calls but few conversations suggests targeting or opening problems; plenty of proposals but few sales suggests qualification, value or closing problems.

Activity is useful only when you understand how it converts.

Australian marketing — tech platforms face a new media bill

Australia is proposing tougher rules requiring large digital platforms to strike payment deals with at least eight Australian news organisations, rather than six under an earlier proposal. The planned system would apply a 2.5% liability on Australian advertising revenue, with part of the funding directed to Australian Associated Press.

Australia raised the number of deals large tech firms must strike with local news outlets under a revamp of its ‌media licensing laws introduced to parliament on Thursday, the government said, adding the measure would distribute advertising revenue to more domestic outlets.
