A good ECE Service for one buyer can be the wrong one for another buyer.....

One of the biggest misconceptions we see in childcare acquisitions is the belief that a centre is either a “good buy” or a “bad buy.” The reality is far more nuanced.

A centre that may be an excellent opportunity for an experienced hands-on owner could be completely unsuitable for a first-time purchaser or passive investor.

Buying childcare is never just about the numbers. It is about understanding operational risk, transition complexity, and whether the business genuinely aligns with your experience, capability and appetite for involvement.

Due diligence should not simply tell you whether to buy. It should tell you whether this particular centre is right for you.

One of the most productive habits we seen in ECE owners isn't working harder.

It's spending one focused hour on a Sunday afternoon planning the week ahead.

Research consistently shows that people who plan their work, identify priorities and schedule key tasks are far more likely to follow through than those who simply hope they'll find the time. Studies on reflection and planning have also found that regularly reviewing and preparing for the week improves performance and reduces mental overload.

The key is that this isn't a Sunday work session.

It's a Sunday planning session.

Review your calendar. Confirm your priorities. Identify potential problems. Decide what success looks like by Friday.

Then close the laptop.

The danger for owners and managers is turning a one-hour planning habit into a six-hour catch-up session. Research is equally clear that recovery time matters. People with more genuine free time tend to be happier, healthier and often more productive than those who work constantly. ([Harvard Business School)

One hour of planning can save several hours of firefighting during the week.

The goal isn't to work more.

The goal is to think more clearly.

This week has been a mix of supporting existing clients and helping new owners take their next steps.

We've been progressing three due diligence investigations for prospective childcare centre purchasers and spending time with some fantastic services celebrating Samoan Language Week.

One highlight was seeing families and Kaiako come together over a traditional parent lunch, complete with fresh snapper being prepared onsite — a great reminder of the important role culture and community play in early childhood education.

We also worked alongside several not-for-profit service managers on governance, compliance and operational planning, while preparing for an upcoming home-based education workshop next week.

Closer to home, a number of services have been navigating RSV cases. The new notification process appears to be working well, and we've recently updated our illness registers to help services manage outbreaks, maintain clear records, and support effective communication with families.

Outside of ECE, we have also been spending some time exploring AI agents and business automations. The pace of change is remarkable, and understanding how these tools may impact administration, communication, compliance and operational efficiency is becoming increasingly important for ECE leaders.

Every week in this sector is different, which is one of the reasons we continue to enjoy working with such a diverse range of services and people across New Zealand.
