It’s a busy week in Auckland’s art scene, with First Thursdays bringing the opening of three new exhibitions on Karangahape Road. At Moat Gallery, Central Façade features Elise McDermott, Jasmin Kirkwood and Dan Arps; at MSJD Gallery, Elsie ‘Christoffel, and Susu present smash, smash, smash, smash; and at Haumi e Studios, Sola Fide features Armani Reynolds-Hatem and Estefana Correa.

Artspace Aotearoa has two events this week. On Wednesday, Atarangi Anderson leads a Deep-Dive lecture exploring her practice, research, the intergenerational transmission of knowledge through aute, and the revitalisation of Māori barkcloth practices. On Thursday evening, as part of First Thursdays, artist Keciano presents works-in-progress for Artspace’s latest Crit Session.

Studio One Toi Tū also opens its new season with three exhibitions on Wednesday evening.

Elsewhere, Disco Bits and Balls opens at Which Way, featuring Yuji Iwase, Warisara Thomson and Nikita Hesketh, while one of these situations at Lett Thomas brings together work by Diane Arbus, Chris Booth, Mike Hewson and Kate Newby. MAY also welcomes William Austin to Pitt Street, with work by Hariata Ropata-Tangahoe, Anna Sisson and Sue Soo. William Austin is a commercial gallery based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, representing an intergenerational mix of early-career and established artists.

It’s also the final week to catch Vertices at Coastal Signs and Cosmic Punchline at Rm, both closing Saturday.

KARANGAHAPE ART WEEKEND 18 - 20 SEP

We invite you to Aotearoa's leading contemporary art district for the inaugural Karangahape Art Weekend.

For one weekend this spring, Auckland's most creative neighbourhood will become one giant gallery. We have 20 galleries, artist-run spaces, and studios joining forces to bring you three days of free late-night openings, exclusive exhibitions, artist talks, guided tours, studio visits, and live music.⁠

Catch the train straight to the new Karanga-a-Hape station and explore Aotearoa's most vibrant creative district on foot.

Participating spaces include Anna Miles Gallery, Artspace Aotearoa, Art + Object, Audio Foundation, Charles Ninow, Coastal Signs, Ironbank Studios, Lett Thomas, Masterworks, May x William Austin, Melanie Roger Gallery, RM, Samoa House Library, Studio One Toi Tū, The Charlotte Museum, Tautai, The Keep and Tim Melville.

Whether you're a seasoned collector, a curious first-time gallery visitor or simply looking for a weekend exploring one of Auckland's most vibrant neighbourhoods, Karangahape Art Weekend offers a rare chance to experience the depth and diversity of contemporary art in Aotearoa, all within walking distance.

We wrap up the month of August on Karangahape with a new exhibition opening this week at Melanie Roger Gallery on Wednesday night. In ‘Other People’s Flowers’, Kirstin Carlin, Julia Holderness and Gavin Hurley turn to the language of flowers to speak both with and through the history of New Zealand art. 

On Friday night, head to Tautai for the opening of their 40th anniversary exhibition ‘K I V A’  which reflects on four decades of artists, communities, and relationships that have shaped the organisation and its ongoing commitment to Pacific creativity in Aotearoa. ‘K I V A’ brings together works by legacy artists Ian George, Jim Vivieaere, Johnny Pen*sula and Lily Aitui Laita alongside archival material that considers Tautai’s history as an evolving practise rather than a fixed record. Looking back at the foundations outlined by Fatu Feu’u that have guided the organisation, this exhibition, curated by Ani O’Neill acknowledges the contributions of those who have shaped its journey all the while considering the possibilities ahead.

Don’t miss exhibitions ending this week too.  It’s your last chance to view four shows ending Thursday at Studio One Toi Tu as well as ‘Vertices’ at Coastal Signs and ‘Other World Bird’ at Mirror Spectrum Journal Division.  Both end Saturday.

COLLAR. One garment detail. Sixty creative interpretations.

Last week at HARDCORE, alongside New Zealand Fashion Week, COLLAR brought together 60 of Aotearoa’s leading designers, artists and makers to reimagine one of fashion’s most enduring forms.
Curated by Lela Jacobs of THE KEEP, the exhibition transformed the humble collar into something altogether more extraordinary an object of art, craft, identity and imagination.
Across weaving, jewellery, costume, fashion, textiles and contemporary craft, each maker responded to the collar through their own practice, creating 60 completely individual works.

An exhibition of bespoke collars by 60 select makers’ hands from across Aotearoa opens tomorrow at HARDCORE on Karangahape Rd.

Presented during New Zealand Fashion Week, this exhibition brings together a group of makers, each responding to THE COLLAR as both object and adornment.
Every piece reflects an individual practice while contributing to a shared narrative celebrating craftsmanship, process, and the enduring value of making by hand.

Suspended together as a single installation, the collars become a portrait of contemporary making in NZ, revealing the richness of material exploration, technical skill and creative expression.

For one night only, with a drink on entry if desired, kindly supplied by Pegasus Bay Wines & Wilder Tinctures
