Last year certainly threw a spanner in the works for the 2020 F12 Tutorial but we were more than up to the challenge of engaging our participants in some way – any way – possible. The four Sydney-based 2020 Tutorial participants (Addy Lam, Katarzyna Sobiesiak, Dom Sweeney and Eduardo Fritis-Lamora) were joined by a bunch of the city’s top wine professionals in late November for a fun and captivating blind NZ chardonnay and pinot noir tasting, complete with several Old World red herrings. Hosted (virtually) by Ata Rangi’s Helen Masters and Felton Road’s Blair Walter, the tasting put a spotlight on the vibrancy and world-class quality of some of the Family of Twelve’s most esteemed cuvees. Here are some of the highlights from the day. Many thanks to Philip Myers for filming and streaming, and to Dom Sweeney for the edits and music.

The Family are thrilled to announce the twelve successful participants for our 2020 Wine Tutorial. Amid these changed times we are engaging this year’s participants with a twist. See the below links for the full participant list and media release.

This year the Family are delighted with the international diversity of our twelve participants. Reflecting the very high calibre of this year’s cohort nine participants are based outside of New Zealand: seven from Australia (four from Sydney and three from Melbourne) and one each from Hong Kong and Shanghai. Of particular note, this year is the first time the tutorial group includes participants from Asia which speaks to the growing awareness and recognition of both the tutorial and Family of Twelve throughout our key export markets.

Craggy Range Winery is a family owned winery established in 1998. Craggy Range produce a collection of iconic wines from multiple regions in New Zealand. The Peabody family pursued the single vineyard approach to winemaking, planting on green fields ensuring an unrelenting focus on quality from the very beginning.

Craggy Range’s Te Muna Road Vineyard in Martinborough consists of two distinct terraces. The higher terrace on which an ancient dried riverbed delivered stony clay-infused soils is perfect for growing Pinot Noir.

Craggy Range produce two Pinot Noirs: Te Muna Road Pinot Noir and their flagship Aroha. Aroha is a romantic word in the Māori language of New Zealand meaning love. Reflective of its namesake, Aroha is handcrafted with passion from two unique parcels of Pinot Noir, including one of the legendary Abel clone.

Martinborough’s warm, dry summers and mild winters lead to complex and structured wines with subtle aromatics and elegant finishes.

Tim and Judy Finn planted Neudorf in 1978. Nestled in the Moutere Hills, they found ancient gravelly clays where they could focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Today their daughter Rosie, Winemaker Todd Stevens and Viticulturist Stef Brockley are at the helm with an aim to produce minimal intervention, organic wines of integrity that speak of their unique sites and climate in the Moutere Clays.

Nautilus Estate has been at the vanguard of Pinot Noir winemaking in Marlborough for over twenty years, since crafting their first Pinot Noir in 1997. Today with mature Pinot Noir plantings, Nautilus is entirely focused on site selection and turangawaewae, ‘The place where I stand’. Years of experience working with specific parcels of fruit from different vineyards, has led to a deep understanding of the distinctive characteristics and potential of each site.

Kelly Gibney created this family meal to match our delicious Pinot Noir. Asian spiced lamb shoulder with rice noodles and quick pickled cucumber.

“I am a firm believer of working with nature. Life in your soil brings balance to your vines and a wonderful depth of flavour in your wines.” Guy McMaster, Chief Winemaker – Palliser Estate

Palliser Estate is one of the pioneers of the Martinborough region, a place that is now synonymous with growing and making great wine – especially Pinot Noir. Palliser helped put the region on the map globally which is something they’re truly proud of, along with their sustainability record and connection to the land and community. All of their wines are 100% estate grown on their six vineyards situated on the revered Martinborough Terrace. 25% of these vineyards are under organic management with a commitment to take this to 100% by 2025.
