We're hiring: Engineering & AI/Automation Summer Intern
Auckland / Waikato | Full-time summer role, with potential part-time work in 2027

Are you a computer science, software, data, AI or engineering student with a strong interest in applying technology to real business problems?

TEG Projects and TEG Risk are seeking a proactive summer intern to help apply AI and automation across our project delivery and risk engineering work, working alongside our project managers and safety engineers on live industrial client projects.

This is not a "prompting" role. We are looking for someone who can understand how the business operates, identify improvement opportunities, and help build practical, working solutions, from workflow automation and scripting to smarter reporting, using tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, Power Automate and Microsoft 365.

This position offers genuine experience applying AI within a professional services environment, exposure to client-facing industrial work, and real input into how we adopt these tools going forward.

At TEG, we carve out time each month to share what we're learning, and this month's session was a good one.

Our team member Wayne recently attended the EECA Wood Energy Workshop in Hawkes Bay and the Energy Summit which reiterated some key messages we are seeing across NZ's industrial energy landscape. A few things that sparked real conversation around the table:

Gas supply is expected to be squeezed within next 5yrs, where industrial users and power generators will be competing for a shrinking resource and generators are likely to have deeper pockets. For businesses reliant on natural gas for ovens, process heat and steam, that timeline is closer than it feels.

Momentum for biomass energy transitions is building fast. Over 30 large-scale industrial biomass installations have gone in across NZ in the last few years. It is forecasted that roughly 20% of our export logs could theoretically displace around 70% of current gas use. The economics are shifting too, one case study showed biofuel boiler operating costs coming in at roughly a third of natural gas.

The infrastructure ask is significant, though, and isn't easily applied to all sites. Biomass boilers are physically larger, need fuel storage and handling systems, and typically run 18–24 months from contract to commissioning. These aren't overnight transitions, and it’s not the only viable solution for every industrial site.

It's sessions like these that keep our team grounded in what's actually happening in the sector, not just the headlines, and guide discussions on the practical realities that shape the projects we work on.

When an audit flagged compliance issues with chemical storage at Fonterra Waitoa, the question was not just what needed fixing - it was how to deliver the upgrade safely inside a live manufacturing site where downtime was not an option.

That is exactly the type of challenge our Industrial Plant Services (IPS) team is built to solve: complex brownfield upgrades that require technical judgement, practical planning and careful integration with ongoing operations.

Led by Graham Brooks, Senior Project Engineer and technical lead for Chemical Storage & Fire Protection within in our IPS team, the project replaced three non-compliant chemical storage tanks and associated reticulation systems across two winter shuts, while daily site operations continued uninterrupted.
The result was HSNO-compliant chemical storage, reduced maintenance burden, and safer, more reliable chemical dosing.

A Chartered Engineer (UK) and PMP-qualified project leader, Graham brings the technical lead capability IPS relies on for chemical handling, process infrastructure upgrades and critical fire protection systems.

Graham celebrates 15 years with TEG this month; a committed and deeply experienced Project Manager and key member of the Industrial Plant Services team.

Keeping production running while expanding a manufacturing facility is never straightforward.

In this beverage factory extension project, the challenge was to create space for a new production line while maintaining hygiene standards and avoiding unplanned downtime.

Through careful planning, staged construction, and close coordination with site teams, the project was delivered safely and on schedule, with production continuing throughout.
