๐ŸŽ“ Missed your 2026 intake? Hereโ€™s what to do next.

What ifโ€ฆ your study plans didn't go quite as expected this year?
We know itโ€™s frustrating when youโ€™re ready to start your journey, but your visa decision hasn't arrived in time. Whether your application was submitted late or simply required a more complex assessment, you still have options to get back on track! โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ“–

Here is your quick guide on how to handle your next steps based on your situation:

๐Ÿ•’ Option 1: You can start later in 2026

If your course has a later intake this year, there is good news!

What happens: Immigration New Zealand can "approve your application in principle" (AIP) provided you meet the requirements.

What you need to do: Keep an eye on your due dates and provide any outstanding information requested. Once met, your visa can be granted for the later start date.

๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Option 2: You have to wait until 2027

If you canโ€™t start until next year, the best path forward is a fresh start.

Our recommendation: Withdraw your current application and request a fee refund.

Why? Documents and personal circumstances (like health or finances) can change over time, making old applications outdated.

When to reapply: We suggest submitting a new application around September 2026 to prepare for the 2027 academic year.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Understand the Green List: The Fast Lane Toward Residency ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

The New Zealand "Green List" identifies high-demand roles that the government has prioritised for a "Straight to Residence" pathway. If your role is on this list, you may be eligible to apply for residency as soon as you secure a job offer from an accredited employer.

๐Ÿ’ป ICT & Technology
The tech sector remains a cornerstone of the Green List. Roles like Software Engineer, ICT Security Specialist, and Developer Programmer allow for an immediate residency application.
Your Path: A Bachelor of IT or Computer Science (Level 7) is the standard foundation for high school graduates entering this field.

๐ŸŽ“ Education
Secondary Teaching is a priority pathway.
Your Path: For those who already hold a degree, a one-year Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching (Level 7) can lead to professional registration. In 2026, reaching Step 5 of the teacher salary scale typically meets the required income threshold for residency.

๐Ÿฉบ Healthcare
Registered Nurses and many specialist roles are on the "Straight to Residence" list.
Your Path: High school graduates can start with a 3-year Bachelor of Nursing (Level 7), while existing degree holders can choose a 2-year Master of Nursing Practice (Level 9).

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Construction & Engineering
Infrastructure roles like Quantity Surveyor and Civil Engineer are critical to New Zealand's growth.
Your Path: These pathways are accessible through Bachelorโ€™s Degrees (Level 7) for new students or Graduate Diplomas (Level 7) for those looking to specialize quickly.

Essential 2026 Requirements:
---Median Wage: $35.00 per hour.
---Professional Registration: For Teaching and Nursing, local registration is a mandatory requirement before your residency application can be submitted.
---Accredited Employers: You must have a genuine job offer from a New Zealand employer who is currently accredited by immigration authorities.

A professional assessment of your background is the best way to start your journey.

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ New Zealand 2026: Which Dedicated Lane Leads to Your Residency?

The road to New Zealand residency isn't a single pathโ€”itโ€™s a series of dedicated lanes designed for different professionals, families, and investors. With the recent 2026 updates, knowing which lane fits your profile is the key to a successful arrival.

Find Your Dedicated Lane:
๐Ÿš€ The Green List Tier 1 (Straight to Residence)
The priority lane for high-demand specialists. If you are a Registered professional with a job offer from an accredited employer, you can apply for residency immediately.

๐ŸŽ“ The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC 6-Point System)
This lane allows you to combine your academic qualifications or professional registration with your New Zealand work experience to hit the required 6-point residency threshold.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ The Skilled Experience & Trades Pathways (New for August 2026!)
A major update for seasoned professionals! If you have 5 years of relevant industry experience but no formal degree, or if you are a qualified tradesperson with a Level 4 certificate, these new lanes offer a direct route to residency based on your proven skills in the New Zealand workforce.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ The Sector Agreements (Care & Transport)
Dedicated lanes for the heroes keeping New Zealand moving. If you work in the Care Workforce or Transport sector, you have a clear, 24-month work-to-residence pathway with protected wage standards.

๐Ÿ’ The Partnership & Family Lanes
Whether you have lived with your New Zealand partner for 12 months, or you are a parent joining your children through the quarterly ballot system, these lanes prioritise family unity.

๐Ÿ’ฐ The Active Investor Plus Lane
The premium lane for those investing $5M+ into New Zealandโ€™s growth. This pathway offers streamlined residency, minimal stay requirements, and exclusive rights to purchase high-value residential property.

Can I actually afford to live and study in New Zealand in 2026? ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ

If you are planning your future, the financial side is likely your biggest question. Here is the straightforward reality of the costs and the earning opportunities for international students today.

1. The Entry Requirement (Your Foundation) ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ
To secure a student visa, you must first show you are financially prepared. This is a mandatory condition:

Tuition: You must pay your first year of fees upfront.

Living Funds: You must show you have at least NZ$20,000 (for Tertiary) or NZ$17,000 (for Secondary) in a verifiable bank account.
This ensures you have a safety net for your first year.

2. The Daily Reality (Living and Working) ๐Ÿ’ฐ
Once you arrive, New Zealand allows you to work significant hours to help you be self-sufficient. This is a key benefit for students:

Tertiary Students: You can work 25 hours per week during term time.

Secondary Students (Year 12 & 13 only): If you are 16 or older, you can also work 25 hours per week (with school and parental consent).

๐ŸŒŸ Holiday Work Rights: During any scheduled holiday period approved by your education provider, both eligible Tertiary and Year 12/13 Secondary students are permitted to work full-time (up to 40 hours per week).

What does this mean for your budget?
The current adult minimum wage is $23.15 per hour (as of March 2026).

Working 25 hours per week = $578.75 per week (before tax).
Working 40 hours during holidays = $926 per week (before tax).

Essentially, your work income can pay for your lifestyle and allow you to build savings during the breaks. New Zealand is a place where the rules are designed to help you succeed. If you need an expert assessment of your specific financial plan, we are available to help.

๐Ÿ“ข Advice on AEWV Holders Changing Jobs

Attention all Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) holders!

๐Ÿ‘‰When Must You Apply for a Job Change?
In most cases, you must apply for a Job Change before starting a new position if you are:
---Changing your employer.
---Moving to a different work location.
---Moving into a role with different responsibilities.

๐Ÿ‘‰Key Tips for Your Application
---The Job Token Number: Your employer must provide a Job Token Number (Job Check number). Do not use the 'unique link' from Immigration Online; INZ now specifically requires the number to process applications efficiently.

---Documentation: Your application must include a job offer or agreement detailing the job title, location, pay, hours, and specific responsibilities. INZ has simplified this by removing the need for certain contact details to speed up processing.

๐Ÿ‘‰When is a Job Change NOT Required?
You may not need to apply if you move into a role with the same core functions at the same location/employer (e.g., a promotion from Adviser to Senior Adviser). Similarly, if a business restructure only changes your reporting lines, you are generally covered.

๐Ÿ‘‰Finishing Employment
If you finish work (including the end of a fixed-term contract) and have 1 month or more left on your visa, your employer must notify INZ within 10 days. Note: A Job Change approval does not extend your original visa expiry date.

At Union Education & Migration, we are committed to keeping our community informed. These changes are designed to streamline applications, but they also carry strict requirements that you must follow to keep your visa status legal. Confused about your next steps? Contact us now:
