Well done George H alright! Great day!!!!!
Here at Titirangi School, we are incredibly lucky to have our very own bee hives at school! 🐝🍯
Yesterday, we welcomed back Jess from BEES UP TOP, who spent the morning with our Year 1 and 2 tamariki, sharing her knowledge and passion for bees. Having hives at our school gives our ākonga such special hands-on opportunities to learn about the important role bees play in our environment.
This term, our Year 1 and 2 tamariki are exploring the concept of Matai - to inspect, examine, investigate, scan, observe, and notice. Their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning about mini beasts and invertebrates has been incredible, making this bee experience the perfect opportunity to deepen their understanding of the natural world. 🐝🌿
Here’s what our Year 2's in Room 5 had to say about their visit:
“We watched Jess put her hand in the hive and she said it felt like a hot toaster! She used a smoker with special leaves to make the bees think there was a fire, so they flew away for a little while. There are 50,000 bees in our hive! We loved tasting the fresh honey. It was really yummy. George H found the queen bee! She was outside the hive on a leaf.”
Our Year 1 tamariki in Room 2 also loved the experience and shared these wonderful observations:
“Today we went to the beehive at school. The beekeeper smoked the bees. We saw the baby bee hatch out of the egg. The beekeeper let us have honey by the bees, it was yummy.” Jamie R2
“Queen bees lay eggs. They can live for five years. The worker bees get nectar and pollen for the queen bee and the baby bees.” Mikayla R2
A special shout out to George H for spotting the Queen Bee, the hive simply couldn’t survive without her. 👑🐝
Thank you BEES UP TOP for helping bring this learning to life for our tamariki.
