We use robust Rovion CCTV inspection crawler cameras (the latest models manufactured in Germany), that have pan and tilt, with operating ranges up to 200m and we record directly into the machine and then import the data into our Wincam programme when we get back to the office. We need to have a talk about concrete.

More specifically, grout, slurry, and concrete wash-off being rinsed into stormwater drains.

This is what happens when it gets washed down the nearest drain during building or exposed aggregate work.

It doesn't disappear.

It sets underground.

Over time, that concrete hardens inside the pipe, restricting flow and creating a blockage that's far more expensive to deal with than the few minutes it would have taken to dispose of it properly.

The good news? We were able to remove this one using our high-pressure jetter unit.

The bad news? Not every blockage is that straightforward.

If you're carrying out building, concreting, or landscaping work near drainage, a CCTV inspection before and after the job can help identify problems early and avoid costly repairs later.

This is what happens when tree roots get into your drainage system.

Once roots find moisture inside a pipe or chamber, they keep growing. Over time they trap debris, restrict flow, and eventually cause serious blockages or pipe damage.

Most people don’t realise it’s happening until drainage slows down or backs up.

A CCTV inspection catches it early before repairs become much bigger.

Spiders actually tell us a bit about the condition of a drain or chamber underground. If they’re living in there, it usually means parts of the area stay relatively dry and undisturbed.

Still… probably not what most homeowners expect to see inside their pipes 😅

If your drains are slow, noisy, or smelling off, a CCTV inspection can show exactly what’s going on underground.

Two photos. One very expensive mistake.

During a CCTV drain inspection, we found a piece of wood from previous works had pierced straight through the drain line underground.

First photo: what the camera saw inside the pipe.
Second photo: the timber dug out from the ground.

From the surface, there were no obvious signs.

This is exactly why pre-build and post-build drain inspections matter, especially around excavation and construction works.

Then the CCTV camera found this 🐭

Not exactly a common drain issue, but it’s a reminder that underground pipes can hide more than people expect.

If your drains are slow, noisy, smelling strange, or backing up, it’s worth checking them properly before the problem gets worse.

The pipe had been installed incorrectly underground, restricting proper flow and creating ongoing drainage problems.

The difficult part with issues like this is that everything can look completely normal from the surface.

No digging.
No obvious warning signs.
Just recurring drain issues that never fully go away.
