Provisional tax dates don’t often line up with business cashflow. For many, 15 January is a clear pressure point.

nzherald.co.nz has picked up our new research with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, exploring the challenges accountants and their clients face.

Of the 334 accountants surveyed:
❎81% say clients’ cashflow constraints affect their ability to pay provisional tax on time
❎77% identify the 15 January instalment date as particularly challenging
❎86% support greater flexibility to defer or reschedule payments without becoming non-compliant

As our CEO Matt Edwards puts it:
“What this research makes clear is that the biggest barriers aren't really about tax knowledge. They're about timing, visibility and having the right tools to act on information quickly.”

The opportunity is clear: better visibility, less manual work and payment flexibility that reflects how businesses operate.

Most accountants know the way provisional tax is managed needs to change. The question is whether their firm will lead it or follow it.

73% of NZ accounting firms expect the way they manage provisional tax to change significantly in the next 2-3 years. The most anticipated shift? Greater use of software, automation, and real-time data.

Research from TMNZ and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand - 334 firms, one clear signal: the status quo isn't the plan.

TMNZ is celebrating two important milestones this month: Chris Cunniffe and Ian Kuperus have each marked 40 years of membership with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

Their paths have crossed throughout their careers – from Inland Revenue and banking to work on the CA ANZ Tax Advisory Group. Ian founded TMNZ with a drive to make the tax system work better for New Zealand businesses. Chris led TMNZ for 12 years and remains our Strategic Advisor.

In our latest story, Chris reflects on what has changed over four decades – and what hasn’t. The tools have moved on from handwritten ledgers, but helping people understand the story behind the numbers still matters.

Congratulations, Chris and Ian. We’re proud to recognise your contribution to the profession and to TMNZ.

How are New Zealand accounting firms really managing provisional tax? We asked 334 of them.

In partnership with Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and The Curiosity Company, TMNZ surveyed accountants on how they manage provisional tax – the pressures, the workarounds, the client conversations, and what they'd change.

Today, the report is live. The findings are candid. The patterns are clear. And for most firms, at least a few things will land close to home.

The New Zealand Law Society Tax Conference is always a good chance to catch up with people doing thoughtful work across tax law and policy. We were glad to be back as sponsors for a third year.

It was great to see familiar faces and meet new people. The conversations are a big part of why we keep coming back.

We also shared a little about the causes TMNZ supports – from Jono Ridler’s 1,367 km Swim 4 the Ocean through Whakatupu Aotearoa Foundation, to the Tax Policy Charitable Trust (powered by TMNZ) and its work supporting the next generation of tax-policy thinkers. It was particularly good to see some TPCT alumni in the room.

Thanks to everyone who stopped for a chat, and to Lauren Campbell, Simon Akozu and Howard Davis for another excellent conference.
See you in 2027.

Three weeks left to help your clients clear historic tax debt, penalty free.

Inland Revenue's tax debt pilot closes 30 September 2026. If you're among the 82% of accountants with affected clients, now is the time to act. If your firm has Inland Revenue integration enabled, TMNZ can instantly pull a report showing every client with eligible 2023–2024 tax debt across your book. No manual lookups. A $20k debt costs clients at least $1,876 less than paying Inland Revenue directly.

Tax law never stands still. Neither do the professionals navigating it.

We're proud to be sponsoring the New Zealand Law Society Tax Conference this year - because staying close to the profession matters to us.

On Wednesday 9 September in Auckland, lawyers, accountants and in-house tax managers will come together to unpack the latest developments shaping tax in New Zealand. It's exactly the kind of conversation TMNZ exists to support - helping tax professionals manage compliance with more clarity, control and less friction.

There's still time to register 👇 https://ap1.hubs.ly/H01jLgt0

We've partnered with CA ANZ to run our annual Inland Revenue Satisfaction Survey. We'll share your feedback with Inland Revenue to help shape a better tax system for all New Zealand businesses and their advisors.

Results will be presented at the 2026 CA ANZ Tax Conference, supported by TMNZ as the exclusive tax pooling partner of CA ANZ.

The survey is anonymous. Takes less than 10 minutes. And closes soon on Monday 31 August. Link in comments Start the survey 👉
