What mark do you want to make?

It’s a simple question, but one that asks us to look beyond the buildings, systems and assets we manage and consider the people behind them.

We’re thrilled to welcome Dr Alia Bojilova, author, psychologist, global keynote speaker and facilitator, to open FM Summit Aotearoa 2026.

In ‘Wayfinders: The Marks We Choose to Make’, Alia will set the scene for this year’s Summit by focusing on the most important part of every place, organisation and profession: he tāngata, the people.

Drawing on powerful experiences from Syria, the psychology of thriving and the science of navigating challenge and change, Alia will explore what sustains us, the strengths we carry and how the choices we make shape the impact we have on those around us.

With warmth, joy and a little geekiness, she’ll help us identify our non-negotiables, set meaningful intentions and leave us with three practical actions to carry forward.

And one challenge to take with us throughout Summit: what is the mark you want to make?

A great building can do its job. A great place can create connection, spark ideas and build a community.

We’re excited to welcome Phil Callaghan, Director of Operations at Melbourne Connect, to FM Summit Aotearoa this October.

In ‘Building More Than a Building: How placemaking creates communities that leave their mark’, Phil will take us inside the evolution of Melbourne Connect, an innovation precinct designed not simply around what happens within its buildings, but around the people, conversations and ideas they bring together.

From the history of the site to customer-centred planning and spaces deliberately designed for conversations of every scale, Phil will explore how placemaking can create communities that continue to grow and evolve long after the doors open.

For facilities managers, it raises an important question: are we simply operating buildings, or helping create places where people and organisations can thrive?

Because the mark a building leaves isn’t only found in its design. It’s found in what happens there.

Resilience doesn’t begin when something goes wrong. By then, the real work should already have happened.

We’re pleased to welcome Dr Lee Bint, Director Sustainability at the New Zealand Defence Force, to the FM Summit Aotearoa stage this October.

In ‘Where Resilience Really Starts’, Lee will explore an increasingly important reality: major disruptions rarely create vulnerabilities from nothing. Instead, they expose weaknesses already sitting within our buildings, infrastructure, supply chains and communities.

Drawing on her work leading sustainability and environmental security for the New Zealand Defence Force, Lee will unpack why environmental change is increasingly being viewed through a security lens and what that means for the organisations responsible for keeping our critical places and systems working.

For facilities managers, the conversation is particularly relevant. FMs see how assets and infrastructure perform in the real world. They understand dependencies, pressure points and the consequences when systems don’t work as intended.

Lee will challenge us to think beyond emergency response and consider how FM insight can help identify vulnerabilities, strengthen preparedness and influence decisions today, so we aren’t designing tomorrow’s points of failure into the places we create and manage.

Last week, our FMANZ branch leaders came together in Ōtautahi Christchurch for our 2026 Branch Hui – connecting, sharing ideas and helping shape what comes next for FMANZ.

Held at the incredible Te Matatiki Toi Ora Arts Centre, the day included plenty of valuable discussion and a fascinating behind-the-scenes technical tour of the venue’s aquifer-sourced heating and cooling system.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us from across the motu, and special thanks to Board Chair Paul Huggins for helping guide the day, Shelton Hooper for helping launch our updated Professional Competency Framework, and James Laughlin for an inspiring talk on motivating ourselves and our teams.

Plenty of great ideas to take forward as we continue building a stronger FM community across Aotearoa.

Our buildings and infrastructure are constantly telling us something - about their performance, people’s changing needs, emerging risks and where investment is needed next. Facilities managers are often the first to see those signals.

We’re pleased to welcome Kali Mercier, WSP Fellow and Deputy Director, Mahi a Rongo | The Helen Clark Foundation, to the FM Summit Aotearoa stage this October.

In 'Fit for the Future: Managing Through Challenging Times', Kali will explore why decision-makers can struggle to identify the most effective ways to invest, and what this means for those caring for our most important assets.

Her session draws on her Helen Clark Foundation research including Measuring What Matters, Built to Last, Age-Proofing Aotearoa, Premiums Under Pressure and Bridging the Infrastructure Gap.

From ageing assets and changing demographics to climate risk, resilience and fiscal constraint, Kali will consider how we make better decisions about the places we already have, and how FMs can translate their operational data, experience and insight into evidence that executives, boards and government value.

This session is a challenge to recognise FM not simply as the profession that keeps our places working, but as an important voice in shaping their future.

It was fantastic to see FMANZ connecting industry with the next generation of facilities management professionals at Lincoln University in Canterbury this week.

A big thank you to longstanding FMANZ member Anthony Van Meer for sharing his experience and insights with Building Facilities Management students in the Bachelor of Land and Property Management programme.

Anthony explored the importance of FM, the evolving role of facilities professionals, and the career opportunities, challenges and emerging trends shaping our sector.

Thank you to Dr Hossein Askarinejad and Lincoln University (NZ) for the invitation and for creating this valuable opportunity for students to hear directly from industry.
