With the recent outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, the situation is looking bleak. With New Zealand in lockdown, majority of businesses are shut, and the economy is performing poorly, however, not all news is doom and gloom. The silver lining is at present, especially for those who have loans or mortgages.

At the current moment, the news is looking positive for mortgage holders. The Reserve Bank has cut the Official Cash rate to a record low of 0.25 percent. The central bank lowered the benchmark interest rate by 0.75 percent in a just-released announcement and said the new low rate would be in place for the next 12 months. This will have a positive impact on fixed and floating interest rates as well.

One might argue that this is not sustainable for banks, however, this is not necessarily the case. Banks currently have robust liquidity and funding positions and can manage short-term disruptions to offshore funding markets. The bank announced a series of immediate measures to help support liquidity to the banking system, including measures last used in the global financial crisis.

Even though the bigger picture looks depressing. It may actually be a great time to lock in a low interest rate for your mortgage or loan. Be assured the banks have learned their lesson and are doing everything they can to stay afloat. Stay strong fellow Zarthrusti, better days are coming ahead.

Taking charge of your finances is one of the most important skills of life. Financial competency can ensure an early retirement and a comfortable living. Naturally, with the ever rising costs of living it makes sense to budget and become accountable for your personal finances. Here are some ways you can stay on top of your finances.

Start by setting a goal:
Make sure you set a SMART goal when it comes to saving money. Be sure to state how much you will spend on food, entertainment and surprise events. Be sure to set a reasonable budget for food or any medical needs. At the end of the day your health is your wealth.

Cold hard cash:
Today it’s very easy to constantly use cards or virtual wallets on our phones for every purchase. However this makes it very easy to spend without thinking about it, and more importantly overspend. Cash based transactions make you more accountable as the money feels more ‘real’ as it’s exchanged for your purchase and allows you to better track your cash flow than simple numbers on a screen.

Pieces of a pie:
Think of your income as a pie. There are some pieces of the pie that you get to eat, some you save for later and some you have to give away. With your income it is advisable that you put 20% into financial requirements. This could be mortgage, emergency funds or medical requirements. Approximatly 30% of your income should go to bare necessities such as food, rent, and paying utilities. Set aside money for fun, but try keep this under control.

Money in the bank:
Keep a regular eye on your bank statements online and through paper statements. This allows you to view your general spending habits and gives a clue as to how you can save more money.

With these tips it is assured that you will save money and enjoy it as well. One should not be a slave to their money, neither should you make money your slave. Treat your finances with respect and it will treat you well for now and in the future.

Time. The most important aspect of life. The rarest commodity. The hardest to control. To get ahead in life, you must learn to prioritize your time on the activities that add the most benefit to your life. The better you are at maintaining focus and managing your time, the more you will achieve. Not only do effective time management skills allow you to get better results at work, but it also helps you withstand stress and live a more fulfilling life outside of work.

Try these three tips to help with your time management:

Start with a clear focus
The first work-related activity of your day should be to determine what you want to achieve that day and what you absolutely must accomplish. You should prioritise the task based on urgency or even difficulty level. Spending as little as 5 min in the morning planning your day will save you hours during the day.

Minimise interruptions
This will help you stay focused on the task at hand. Try to clear your desk area of any distractions such as cellphones, little trinkets or even mess. Try to keep the focus going by not opening multiple tabs on your web browser or even closing any additional tabs that are running in the background. Once you break your flow, it is hard to get back on it.

Review your work
This is the part where you take a critical look at your work and be honest with yourself. The big question is, ‘Did you accomplish what you need?’ If not, then how can you better focus on the important aspects? What can you do better next time to stay focused on the task?

Give these tips a solid go and you will find that your productivity has improved greatly and your day is running smoothly. Be sure to start the day with a clear focus and maintain that energy by reducing distractions. End the day by reviewing your work and seeing where you can improve 👍

It's 2020 and you know what that means? Time to set those new year resolutions. Many people go about setting arbitrary goals and end up not achieving them. A well planned goal can make the difference. So how should you set them? A SMART goal is used to help guide goal setting. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. A SMART goal incorporates all of these criteria to help focus your efforts and increase the chances of achieving that goal.

Specific: this is about being well defined, clear, and unambiguous. Ask specific aspects such as:
Who will help me?
What do I need?
When do I start?
Where do I go?

Measureable: A SMART goal must have criteria for measuring progress. If you can’t measure it then how do you know you are progressing? Keep in mind the units of progression and even pace. To make a goal measurable, think about:
Quantity i.e. how much?
How do I know if I have reached my goal?
How do I know if I have improved?

Achievable: The achievability of the goal should be challenging but doable at the same time. To know if a goal is achievable, you should ask yourself:
Do I have the resources?
Am I capable to achieve the goal? If not, what am I missing?
Have others done it successfully before?

Realistic: A SMART goal must be realistic in that the goal can be realistically achieved given the available resources and time. Here are some simple ways to determine if your goal is realistic:
Is the goal within reach?
Is the goal reachable given the time and resources?
Are you committed to achieving the goal?

Timely: The last part of goal setting is keeping to a time frame. You should give yourself the right amount of time so that you feel motivated but not rushed. A time frame will give you the motivation to achieve what you need. For this you should know if your goal has a deadline or even a start date?

SMART goals set you up for success by making it specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. The SMART method helps push you further, gives you a sense of direction, and helps you organize and reach your goals.
