It's 2020 and you know what that means? Time to set those new year resolutions. Many people go about setting arbitrary goals and end up not achieving them. A well planned goal can make the difference. So how should you set them? A SMART goal is used to help guide goal setting. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. A SMART goal incorporates all of these criteria to help focus your efforts and increase the chances of achieving that goal.
Specific: this is about being well defined, clear, and unambiguous. Ask specific aspects such as:
Who will help me?
What do I need?
When do I start?
Where do I go?
Measureable: A SMART goal must have criteria for measuring progress. If you can’t measure it then how do you know you are progressing? Keep in mind the units of progression and even pace. To make a goal measurable, think about:
Quantity i.e. how much?
How do I know if I have reached my goal?
How do I know if I have improved?
Achievable: The achievability of the goal should be challenging but doable at the same time. To know if a goal is achievable, you should ask yourself:
Do I have the resources?
Am I capable to achieve the goal? If not, what am I missing?
Have others done it successfully before?
Realistic: A SMART goal must be realistic in that the goal can be realistically achieved given the available resources and time. Here are some simple ways to determine if your goal is realistic:
Is the goal within reach?
Is the goal reachable given the time and resources?
Are you committed to achieving the goal?
Timely: The last part of goal setting is keeping to a time frame. You should give yourself the right amount of time so that you feel motivated but not rushed. A time frame will give you the motivation to achieve what you need. For this you should know if your goal has a deadline or even a start date?
SMART goals set you up for success by making it specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. The SMART method helps push you further, gives you a sense of direction, and helps you organize and reach your goals.
