This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re embracing Top Up Together - a nationwide campaign encouraging everyone to care for their mental wellbeing by connecting with others in everyday life.

Social connection is vital. It boosts happiness, resilience, and longevity, while isolation increases the risk of illness and stress. Activities like volunteering, learning together, exercising, and attending community events all help strengthen mental health.

Let’s look after our oranga - our holistic wellbeing, by practicing the Five Ways to Wellbeing: Take Notice, Give, Be Active, Connect and Keep Learning.

We embraced the Kōrero Starter Cards in our team meeting this morning to get to know each other a little better. It was an easy, fun and interesting way to build stronger connections within our Emergent whānau. We’d recommend it!

Many of us have felt the effects of disconnection, whether personally or through loved ones. This week is a chance to reconnect, recharge, and support each other because wellbeing is better when we top up together.

⚡ Recruitment Real Talk

Continuing our info bite series helping to demystify common agency misconceptions, in Part Two Danielle Rainbow shares her insights on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the recruitment process.

We often hear concerns from both candidates and clients about how recruiters might be utilising AI tools, sometimes extensively, in the hiring process. Candidates may worry that agencies rely solely on AI to screen CVs, potentially missing those with non-traditional backgrounds or less obvious qualifications – individuals who are not an apparent fit on paper. Likewise, clients may question whether they’re only seeing candidates who’ve passed an AI filter, potentially missing out on individuals with valuable transferable skills or other beneficial attributes.

At Emergent, we will always carefully combine AI with human oversight, blending technology with expert judgement to ensure a strong candidate is never overlooked and each client sees the full talent landscape.

Striking the right balance is critical. AI is an important tool that used well can automate parts of the recruiting process reducing the time to hire. However, recruitment is, and always will be, a people business. Our commitment to personal service and care will remain at the heart of everything we do – it’s what we’re known for.

At Emergent, we believe that culture isn’t just what we say - it’s what we do, every single day. It’s how we show up for each other, how we treat our clients, and how we lead with care at every level.

This week, Shelley Byers sat down with our General Manager of Operations & People, Rachael Lewis-Green to talk about what culture really means for us at Emergent.

Culture starts at the top. It’s about how we show up, the tone we set, and the care we extend - to our people and our clients.

Care underpins everything we do internally and externally. It’s not just a value on the wall; it’s a commitment we live by. Whether it’s a team member needing support or a client navigating change, we lead with empathy, integrity, and intention.

The way leaders in a business show up consistently, authentically, and with care... it's the shadow we cast. That shadow becomes the culture. And at Emergent, we’re proud of the one we cast.

Let’s keep building a workplace where people feel seen, supported, and inspired to do their best work.

This month, we're delighted to recognise Lena as our Temp of the Month! 👏

In a time when adaptability and resilience are more important than ever, Lena stepped into Retail Marketing Coordinator role and made an immediate impact. From day one, she brought energy, professionalism, and a can-do attitude that inspired the whole team.

💬 A few words from her manager:
Lena’s attentive, quick to respond to queries, and s always open to feedback. Her positive and can-do attitude makes even tricky situations feel easy, and as the first point of contact for stores, she consistently keeps things running smoothly.

⚡ Recruitment Real Talk

In this educational info bite series, we help demystify common agency misconceptions and show how we operate as your strategic recruitment partner.

Today Jessica Amey shares her insights on DIY recruitment.

We sometimes hear “we can just do it ourselves” from clients or “I’ll just apply directly” from candidates.

Whether you're a business trying to hire or a professional looking for your next role, your first thought might be to attempt doing it alone.

For our clients we:
💠 Save time by managing the entire hiring process
💠Quickly filter and highlight top talent from high application numbers
💠Focus on quality over quantity to deliver shortlisted top-tier candidates aligned to your company culture and long-term goals
💠Allow you to keep focused on your core business operations - freeing up your internal resources to do what they do best
💠Move at pace to reduce costly process delays – keeping talent engaged
💠Help avoid the high cost and business impact of a poor hiring decision – ensuring a strong investment in your team from the start

…and what about the elusive unicorn. That standout candidate who doesn’t just meet your criteria, they redefine it. They’re not browsing job boards, they’re in roles where they’re already making an impact – we know who they are.

For our candidates we:
💠Unlock hidden opportunities not advertised publicly
💠Offer CV and interview coaching
💠Share market insights and salary benchmark information
💠Provide quick feedback and updates
💠Support you through negotiations
💠Partner with you and walk you through the entire process and beyond – we don’t wave goodbye at the gate

Whether you're hiring or job hunting, the right recruiter can make all the difference.

Pink Shirt Day is a powerful reminder of the importance of kindness, inclusion, and standing up against bullying — every day and everywhere.

At Emergent, we stand against bullying, harassment, bias, and discrimination in all its forms.

We’re committed to creating a fair, respectful, inclusive recruitment experience where every candidate feels safe, seen, and supported from the very first interaction.

Bullying during the hiring process can show up in many ways, from discriminatory practices and biased questioning to power imbalances and exclusionary practices. Bullying has distinct features that make it more serious and harmful than other behaviours; such as being deliberate, demonstrating a misuse of power in a relationship, being repetitive in nature, and involving behaviour that can cause harm.

Let’s all do our bit to build workplace cultures that support and actively live the principles of Pink Shirt Day – starting with promoting fairer, more respectful recruitment practices that prioritise empathy, equity, and a sense of safety and belonging.

Every one of us it responsible for playing our part in celebrating diversity and creating safe environments.
