What inspires you in life and in business?
I love to hear the stories of people from diverse backgrounds and especially women in business who have taken the road less travelled.
My much loved and amazing Aunt died last month, and she has always been an inspiration to me. Upon reflection, at this stage in my life, I realise how lucky and grateful I am to have had her in my life.
During the preparation for the celebration of her life (I was to be the celebrant, and my Mum was delivering the eulogy), we talked about all the incredible things my aunt did during her life.
A couple of those things…
She bought and rode a motorbike when she was still at high school during the 1950s in Christchurch New Zealand, and then went on to race motorbikes and place in race events. Her photo even appeared on the cover of New Zealand Motor Cyclist in 1954.
She met her husband (my uncle) while racing motorbikes and they shared a love for the sport of motorcycling and one another.
Several years after they were married, they moved to Stewart Island (if you are reading this and not in New Zealand, I encourage you to Google Stewart Island to get a sense of how remote their life was) and started a cray fishing business.
They built a boat, thanks to a loan from my grandmother (Nana), whom the boat was named after, and then they set about running their cray fishing business. This was a courageous venture to embark on and even more so because my aunt could not swim!
We visited them while they lived there when I was just a kid, and I am lucky to have experienced some of the amazing things that Stewart Island offers. We flew into the island on a floatplane and saw a giant of the sea, a Grey Whale playing in the bay, an oil rig going past, and so many Kereru (NZ wood pigeons) that were so big that their wings flapping made a huge sound as they flew over us. And we ate so much fresh seafood too – of course!
There are many more stories, however, one thing I want to share with you as I conclude this tale is that my aunt left me her jewelry including a Great White shark’s tooth on a silver chain that I now wear with pride to my business meetings. Its sharpness reminds me of my aunt’s inspiring life, and to have courage when I feel fear or am doing something I have not done before.
What inspires you? I'd love to hear about it.
