⚠️ Working at Height: Let's Bust the 3-Metre Myth

I still occasionally hear people say, "We only need to consider working at height risks if we're working above 3 metres."

❌ This is not correct.

The old "3-metre rule" is a common myth and is not a requirement under current New Zealand health and safety legislation.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, businesses must identify and manage any risk of a fall that could cause injury, so far as is reasonably practicable, using the hierarchy of controls.

Many serious injuries occur from falls at relatively low heights. That's why WorkSafe New Zealand recommends that any potential fall of more than 1 metre should be adequately controlled, with preference given to physical barriers, or fall restraint systems.

✅ Don't assume a task is low risk just because it's under 3 metres.

✅ Assess the risk.

✅ Implement appropriate controls.

✅ Keep your workers safe.

Reflecting on a recent hands-on yacht safety workshop at the Waikawa Boating Club: we deployed a four-person life raft and climbed in. It was a tight fit and a reminder of just how crucial readiness is. Whether on the water or in the workplace, safety drills build confidence and save lives. Always be prepared.
And remember, it’s just as important to check and maintain your lifejacket. Preparedness is everything.

Heads up for anyone managing health and safety at work. There are some important health and safety updates on the horizon.
Amendments to the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 will come into force next year, and one of the key changes is that Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP) will be able to be recognised as compliance. The ACOP for Residential Construction is currently in draft, and worth keeping an eye on if you work in that sector.

WorkSafe NZ has also updated several guidance documents, including the Safe Use of Machinery Good Practice Guidelines (GPG) and the Working at Height GPG.
