If you’re thinking about coming in today to have lunch from Sasa express our team have diligently researched the very best beverage matches to go with the flavours of their menu. The rich, seafood flavour of takoyaki needs something aromatic and bright to balance, so we reach for our Kēkerengū Coast Albariño. Matching spicy food with wine can be tricky, and the conventional wisdom is that you need a sweet wine, but our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc holds up well to the Angry Bird fried chicken, its flavour profile pairing beautifully with the aromatic Thai herbs. And for a classic pairing, what could be better than freshly handmade fried dumplings and a cold beer. If you have to get back to the office after lunch, our Sawmill 0% Bare Beer is a great call.

Sasa Express hours:
FRI LUNCH 11:30am-2:00PM
FRI DINNER 5:00PM-7:30PM
SAT DINNER 5:00PM-7:30PM

Our next wine tasting night is next Tuesday the 8th from 5:30. Check our event finda or page for more info, but here’s a quick rundown: bring a wine and $15 for corkage and some small snacks, then our team will pour all the wines blind for us to try. Quite a quirky and challenging tasting lineup last time, with a few potentially identifiable classic styles (two Bordeauxs and a Douro red blend), a very dark and structured Gamay from Moulin-à-Vent that tricked the whole table, some off-piste German selections of Müller-Thurgau and a Dornfelder/Blaufränkisch red blend... and a medium sweet red wine which was, of course, Saperavi from Georgia. Even if you don’t get anything right, not a problem — this wine tasting night is super casual, and it’s more about trying interesting wines and chatting about them with other wine lovers.

Last night at the Top 💯 Sommeliers 🇳🇿 awards ceremony, Small Town Winery’s very own Oisin Moore was named in the top 100 of New Zealand’s sommeliers alongside some of New Zealand’s very best in wining and dining. Oisin’s past experience in the European wine trade, his WSET qualifications and study, along with his passion for wine underpin his curation of our Astrolabe wine tasting experiences and also our international wine list available in our wine bar. So if you are in our cellar door and looking for a wine recommendation or perhaps a food match, maybe challenge him a little. We are so lucky to have some of the country’s best working in Marlborough, championing our region and wines, so it was really cool to see Arbour Liz Buttimore be awarded the number 4 spot!

On Sunday evening, our cellar door was transformed into an exhibition space as we hosted Marlborough Community Potters Patrons Collection launch. 18 works of ceramic art were showcased and will be on display at Thomas’s Marlborough | Premier Department Store NZ until the 7th of September. They are available for tender on the Marlborough Community Potters website, with all proceeds going towards their new clubrooms project.

Time to renew your antihistamine prescription and emerge from winter hibernation. Our Grovetown Spätlese Riesling bursts with the flavours of spring — fruity and floral, with notes of ripe citrus and apple blossom. Its sweet and sour balance makes it perfect for matching cheese, where the richness can overwhelm some wines. It pairs well with anything from the sharp, umami-rich Meyer Vintage Gouda to the creamy Chaumes. Our current cheese list features seven different cheeses from seven different producers. All ordered individually to design your own cheese and wine tasting. We are open every day of the week from 10am till 8:30pm and till 10pm on Friday and Saturday.

From 5:30 till 7pm tonight, we will be closed for Café Create, a free social event for local creatives. Tegan is this month’s guest speaker, and she will be discussing the new build project for Marlborough Community Potters and sharing her experiences as a ceramicist. There is still space available to RSVP on eventfinda.

We will also be closed on Sunday evening from 4:30 till 7:30 for the launch of the Patrons’ Collection, an exhibition showcasing works from 18 of Marlborough’s most accomplished potters. We are sponsoring this private event as part of the fundraiser for the Marlborough Community Potters new clubrooms.

If you love fried chicken, catch Sasa Express at Small Town Winery tonight from 5:00pm-7:30pm. They have four different styles — this is the Icky Sticky, a mildly sweet and spicy Korean style, and the Angry Bird, an aromatic Thai style with garlic, chilli and coriander. They’ll also have their Poke Bowls, Gyoza and Takoyaki.

Here’s our three latest guest wines on by the glass. To show something with a more oxidative style of winemaking and also to add another sweeter style for winter, we’ve picked up a Madeira from Justino's Madeira Wines one of the oldest producers on the island, though this is from Verdelho, so more medium-dry in expression. Well-established Piedmont producer Vietti Winery contributes a Barbera d’Alba, a juicy Italian red with flavours of red cherry, violet and vanilla, and the white counterpart to the Vino Tinto we have had on the list recently, this Godello from Grava brings flavours of green pear, lime zest, golden delicious apple, with an oily texture and a salty, mineral finish.
