🚨 NEW TO NEW ZEALAND? HERE'S SOMETHING IMPORTANT YOU SHOULD KNOW

New Zealand uses an Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system to warn people about serious emergencies that could put lives, health, or property at risk.

These alerts may be sent for events such as:
🌊 Tsunamis
🔥 Wildfires
🌧️ Severe weather and flooding
🚔 Armed offenders
💧 Contaminated drinking water
⚠️ Other major emergencies

Emergency Mobile Alerts are sent directly to compatible mobile phones in affected areas. You don't need to download an app or sign up for anything. If your phone is switched on and connected to the mobile network, you may receive an alert if there is an emergency in your area.

A few things worth knowing:
✅ The alerts are free
✅ You cannot opt out of them
✅ They are only sent by authorised emergency agencies
✅ They are based on your location, not your phone number or SIM card

📢 UPCOMING NATIONWIDE TEST

New Zealand's annual Emergency Mobile Alert test will take place on:

📅 Sunday 14 June 2026
🕕 Between 6:00pm and 7:00pm

If your phone suddenly makes a loud emergency alert sound during this time, don't panic — it's just a test.

The annual test is a great opportunity to make sure your phone can receive Emergency Mobile Alerts. If family, friends, neighbours, or colleagues receive the alert and you don't, it's worth checking your device compatibility and settings afterwards.

For many migrants, this may be the first time experiencing New Zealand's emergency alert system, so it's helpful to know what to expect before the alert arrives.

Being prepared isn't about expecting the worst — it's about knowing where to find trusted information when you need it.

Find out about Emergency Mobile Alert. Emergency Mobile Alerts keep people safe. Alerts are broadcast to all capable phones from targeted cell towers.

Hy kyk my dood ernstig aan.
“Werk hulle vir die mall?”

“Nee…”

“Werk hulle vir sekuriteit?”

“Nee…”

“Maar hoekom wys hulle jou dan hoe om te parkeer?”

“Uhm… om te help.”

“Maar kan julle dan nie self parkeer nie?”

En dis toe waar ek begin sweet.

“Ja nee ons kán… maar hulle help dat niemand jou kar krap nie.”

Toe vra hy:
“Maar hoekom sal iemand jou kar krap?”

Nou probeer jy mooi verduidelik sonder om jou hele land soos Gotham City te laat klink.

“Nee kyk… dis net… ekstra veiligheid.”

“Kom boss… kom boss… sharp sharp… links… links… stop!”

Net stilte.

Dis amper hartseer.

I had this thought…

If motherhood had to be written up as a CV,
I think a lot of us would actually sit there and go, “oh… wow… I do a lot more than I thought.” 😅

Because it’s not just “being a mom”...

It’s the constant thinking,
the mental lists that never stop,
the worrying… about everything. 🫠

It’s trying to stay patient when you’re already overwhelmed,
(and sometimes bribing with a biscuit or screentime just to get through the moment 😌).

It’s figuring things out as you go,
learning things you were never taught
and somehow still being the calm, safe place your kids run to.

And then you add being in a new country on top of that… ✈️🇳🇿

No mom down the road,
no family popping in,
no “can you just watch them for a bit”...

You just… become everything. 🙌

The comfort,
the backup plan,
the village.

Even on the days where you miss home a little extra. ❤️‍🩹

And I don’t think that’s something that should only be recognised once a year...

Because this isn’t a once-a-year role,
(it’s more like a 24/7, no-days-off kind of thing).

So today… and on all the normal, messy, exhausting days in between…

Just a reminder that you’re doing an incredible job. 🤗

Even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

Happy Mother’s Day! 🩷

8 years ago, I left South Africa.

I left people I love deeply.
My mom, my brother, my gran and grandfather.
Friends, familiarity… a whole life that felt like home.

But I didn’t leave empty-handed.

I brought my memories.
My culture.
My way of seeing the world.

I brought sunsets on the stoep,
family gatherings,
the sound of Afrikaans in everyday life,
and all the little things that made home… home.

But 8 years of immigration doesn’t look like one perfect, straight path.

It looks like missing people in ways you can’t even begin to explain. 💔
Starting over more than once.
Learning things the hard way.
Quiet wins no one sees.
And moments where you just… keep going.

And the truth is —
it doesn’t just get “easy”.

You don’t stop missing people.
You don’t stop feeling the distance.

You just learn how to live with it.
You adapt.
You carry it differently...

I still remember one of my first days here.

The people I was staying with told me I should go for a walk to a little reserve just down the road.

And I remember thinking…
Should I really be walking there… by myself? 😅

I did.

And I remember how strange it felt.
Not peaceful. Not yet.
Just… unfamiliar.

Even though nothing was happening.
Even though I was safe.
That feeling stayed with me.

And over time, I added to it.

New routines.
New places.
New versions of “home.” 🏠

8 years later, I’m not the same person who left.

But I’m still carrying where I came from —
just woven into something new.

And that’s exactly why I started Fresh Start Abroad.

Because I remember how overwhelming those early days felt —
the uncertainty, the questions, the “where do I even start?”

If I can make that journey even just a little clearer,
a little less stressful for someone else…
then it means something.

And looking back now…
that version of me had no idea the home she would one day create for herself here in New Zealand.

There are no words that truly feel enough for something like this… 💔

Maria has lost her husband in the most sudden and devastating way and now finds herself navigating unimaginable grief, while caring for four children, far from home and the support of family.

As migrants, we understand what it means to build a life far away from where we come from… but in moments like this, that distance feels even heavier.

Her wish is simple, yet so meaningful... to take her husband home to Zimbabwe, to lay him to rest where he belongs, surrounded by family, heritage, and love.

If you’re able to support in any way, no matter how small, it will make a real difference during an incredibly difficult time.

And if you can’t give, please consider sharing — let’s help this reach people who can. 💙

Thinking of Maria and her children during this heartbreaking time. 🫶

🇳🇿 What is ANZAC Day?

If you’re new to New Zealand (or planning your move), you might hear a lot about ANZAC Day on the 25th of April.

But what is it actually about?

ANZAC stands for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, and this day commemorates the soldiers who served and sacrificed their lives—starting with the Gallipoli landing during World War I.

Over time, it has become a day to honour all New Zealanders and Australians who have served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions.

🌺 The poppy tradition:

You’ll notice many people wearing red poppy flowers on ANZAC Day.

The poppy became a symbol of remembrance after World War I, inspired by the flowers that grew on the battlefields in Belgium.

In New Zealand, poppies are distributed by the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services' Association (RSA), and wearing one is a simple but powerful way to show respect and remembrance.

🌅 How is it observed?

ANZAC Day is a quiet, respectful day across the country:

Dawn Services – held early in the morning (very moving)

Laying of wreaths at memorials

Moments of silence to reflect and remember

You’ll often hear: “Lest we forget”

Many businesses remain closed in the morning as a sign of respect.

❤️ A powerful way to understand it:

If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend visiting the Te Papa museum in Wellington.

They have an incredible Gallipoli exhibition that really brings this history to life. The lifelike sculptures of soldiers and nurses are on a massive scale and so detailed—it honestly gives you a completely different perspective and a much deeper understanding of what ANZAC Day represents.

It’s something you don’t just see… you feel.

🙌 Why it matters:

Even if you’re not from NZ or Australia, this is one of those days that helps you understand the heart of the country.

It’s about remembrance, respect, and recognising the sacrifices that shaped the nation.

If you’re here today, you might notice the stillness… the flags… the gatherings.

Take a moment. It’s something truly special to witness 🇳🇿

💬 Have you experienced an ANZAC Day service or worn a poppy before?
💬 Or do you know of any other places or museums in NZ (or even Australia) that bring this history to life? Share them below—we’d love to discover more.

The Fresh Start Abroad Business Directory was created because I kept seeing the same thing happen over and over again in Facebook groups.

People ask for recommendations…
then scroll through endless comments…
often basing their choices on what worked for others — even though what works for one person isn’t always the right fit for someone else.

This directory is still new and growing, but the idea is simple:
💡 one place where you can browse, compare, read reviews, and choose the service or product that suits YOUR needs, without pressure or guesswork.

The businesses listed here didn’t just sign up for visibility — they joined because they genuinely want to support our community and help newcomers who might feel overwhelmed, unsure, or a little lost when starting over.

Here are the South African-owned and Saffa-friendly businesses currently listed — each offering a different service to help with the move to NZ or settling in once you’re here, with a shared understanding of the journey and a familiar sense of home.

(This is just a snapshot of what each business offers — there’s more info available on each listing on the website.)

Important note for clarity:
Fresh Start Abroad does not provide financial, insurance, immigration, or legal advice. Business listings and descriptions are supplied for general information purposes only. Some services may be delivered directly by the listed business, while others may be facilitated via licensed third parties. Always confirm licensing, scope of advice, and service delivery directly with the provider.
