Tiakina tō tinana
Look after your body

This is just a reminder of how our physical connection to wai can change over time. For me, being hapū over the summer means that the water is still my favourite place to be, but my limits have definitely changed! This means taking the time to learn new skills and work out what’s comfortable for my body in the water this summer.

It’s our responsibility to our whakapapa to know the capabilities of our tinana so that we can continue to be safe and love the wai 💧

The Minnesota-based shoe brand Minnetonka Moccasin has issued an apology acknowledging how they have profited off of Native American culture for the last 75 years. The company isn’t Native owned and has sold moccasins and Native-inspired accessories.

Companies must take accountability when they borrow or steal elements or designs from other cultures. We hope to see Minnetonka honor its commitment to work with Native artists and designers.

We urge other brands to recognize and correct their mistakes to do the right thing.

Companies can find meaningful and respectful ways to support talented Native artists and designers who innovate and carry on our traditions.

Consumers must also do their part by supporting Native-owned brands and only purchasing Native designs and art made by or with Native peoples.
