The super-talented Habibi has finally shown North American audiences what she is capable of, powering home from midfield to claim an emphatic victory in the Listed Flaming Page at Woodbine in Canada today. Winning for the first time since her New Zealand Derby triumph at Ellerslie in March 2013, Habibi’s performance in today’s C$100,000 feature marked a welcome and spectacular return to top form. Held up in sixth place for most of the 12-furlong journey (2400 metres) by champion Canadian jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, Habibi unleashed a fierce late sprint down the straight to overhaul her opposition and drive clear to win by a comfortable length. “I was a little worried the pace may string out and the leader could get away on her own,” Wilson said. “I just wanted to have my filly settled, covered in behind somebody and switch her off a little bit. She was just cruising easily. “A mile and a half is fun when you have a horse that can go the distance. She’s bred to do it.” A daughter of Ekraar and the Danasinga mare Danny Holiday, Habibi is now trained by Mark Frostad for owners Augustin Stable. Formerly raced by her breeders Heather and Peter Crofskey and trained at Ruakaka by Donna and Dean Logan, Habibi won six of her seven starts in New Zealand including the Derby, the Gr. 2 Great Northern Guineas and the Gr. 2 Championship Stakes. She had two starts at Group One level in Sydney for third and fourth in the Vinery Stakes and Australian Oaks, suffering a serious leg injury in the latter and not racing again for more than a month. Habibi has so far raced six times in North America for a variety of trainers. After two placings at allowance level, a fifth in the Gr. 3 Santa Barbara Handicap and eighth-place finishes in the Gr. 2 Royal Heroine Stakes and Gr. 3 Singspiel Stakes, this was the first appearance by the real Habibi and this was her first success. The six-year-old has now had 15 starts for seven wins, a second and two thirds.
"Big thrill, she's back," Heather Crofskey tweeted this morning.
