All about Meraki

We often get asked what Meraki means. A lot of people, naturally assume it is a Maori word. But in fact it is a Greek word which does not have a one word translation. It means something along the lines of: “to do everything with passion and love, to leave a piece of yourself behind in the the work you do”.

When Emma and I were looking for a name for our coworking space we were creating in 2016 and we stumbled across this little gem, we instantly knew it was it. We 100% identified with the meaning of the word as it really put into words how we thought about our life and work and we wanted to attract members who thought the same.

I came to Cambridge back in 2014 and shortly after became involved in the business community and the Business Chamber as I was building and growing my first online business. Since early on there was this chatter about “someone needs to do this”, “Cambridge needs this” etc. In 2016 I was ready to give in to the calling. I was driving down the main street and it just became so clear. I knew I NEEDED to do this. So I rang my friend Emma and talked her through it and she was hooked too. Shortly after we were joined by our third friend Rachel who came along with her accounting expertise and a third opinion, too.

Cambridge is a small place and back in 2016 had even less office for lease space than what it has now. We ended up signing a lease at 32 Victoria Street and after a Summer full of dust, scrubbing and painting we opened the doors to Meraki Workspace on the 1st February 2017.
