Business Update July
Signs of a Slow Climb — But Momentum is Building
________________________________________
Better Days Are Coming — and Some Are Already Here

It’s no secret the last couple of years have tested even the best-run businesses. Rising costs, interest rates, and softer spending have made things tough across the board — especially for small and medium-sized businesses who often carry the load without the cushion of big reserves or teams.
But lately, I’ve been having more conversations that feel different. Optimistic, even.
Across our BSP client base — from plumbers to joiners, engineers to service firms — many are telling us they're getting busier. New jobs are coming in. Clients are committing again. And, importantly, business owners are starting to feel like they can plan more than a month ahead. There are still struggles but there is a shift
And that shift matters.
The Tide Is Slowly Turning
The broader signs are lining up too.
 Interest rates are starting to ease
 Business confidence is cautiously lifting
 Government infrastructure spend is rolling out
 Rural and regional sectors are stabilising
That’s translating into a steadier pipeline of work for many trades and service businesses.

Of course, it’s not all smooth sailing — retail, hospitality, and other consumer-driven businesses are still finding things tight. But the overall message is encouraging we’re on the way up, even if the climb is a gradual one.

So, What Should You Be Doing Right Now?
Here’s some quick advice to get ahead of the curve:
 Stay steady – Nail the basics: cashflow, quoting, delivery.
 Look ahead – Map out what a strong 6–12 months looks like for you.
 Be ready for demand – If you're getting busier, plan how to handle it without burning out.
 Stay visible – As confidence returns, reputation and presence matter more than ever.
Make the Most of the Upswing
Some of you are already in growth mode. Others are just getting their footing back. Either way, this is the time to get clear on your direction and take control of what’s next.
At BSP Advisory Group, we’re here to support you — with the right systems, strategy, and advice to help your business thrive in this next phase.
If you’d like to chat through your own plans, challenges, or ideas we are always happy to help.
Here’s to a more confident, profitable second half of the year.
Warm regards,
Phil Wicks

Last Month, our team headed to the Gold Coast for our annual conference- but not just for work, but for something just as important: to celebrate. We’d had a great year.

SME BUSINESS TABLE
The inaugural SME Business Table event marked a significant departure from traditional networking gatherings, providing a unique platform where business owners could engage in deep, meaningful conversations about relevant topics. The emphasis wasn't so much on networking but on fostering a supportive environment that encouraged participants to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and offer mutual support.

Our first session delved into the critical subjects of culture and leadership, areas that are foundational yet often overlooked in the hustle of daily business operations. The discussions were rich, enlightening, and provided tangible benefits, helping business owners feel less isolated. Although two business owners were absent due to illness, this gathering of 7 business owners turned out to be a great success, sparking valuable insights and connections that participants could take back to enhance their own business practices. We are thrilled with the outcome and look forward to more fruitful discussions in future events. The SME Business Table is a SBNZ Event sponsored by BSP Advisory Group, meetings are once a month for two hours. If you would like to join or start a local group, email Phil Wicks at [email protected] .

Maximise Your Business Value: A Strategic Vision for Long-Term Success

One of the most common mistakes business owners make is viewing their enterprise solely through the lens of day-to-day operations without considering the broader perspective of business value. For SMEs, sustainable growth involves much more than just boosting short-term profits; it encompasses building a robust framework that enhances the company's worth over its lifetime.
A truly valuable business is one that operates efficiently even without constant oversight from the owner. Achieving this level of autonomy isn't just about delegating tasks or improving processes—it's about instilling a strong sense of culture and leadership within the organisation. This strategic approach not only frees up owners from daily operations but also significantly increases the business's appeal to potential buyers or successors.
As a Business Advisor, over the years I have learned to always have some focus on the value of my client’s businesses.
Focusing on business value from the outset does more than prepare your company for a future sale. It creates a business that is resilient, adaptable, and capable of thriving in competitive environments. Key areas to concentrate on include operational efficiency, financial health, and market position. However, equally important are often overlooked aspects such as company culture and the development of a strong leadership team. These elements are crucial for businesses that aspire to "Step Up" in their operational capabilities, "Step Back" from day-to-day management, and eventually "Step Out" through a successful transition of ownership.
At BSP Advisory our approach integrates these principles into our "Step Up, Step Back, Step Out" strategy, which we will detail in new workshops but also our client engagements. By fostering leadership skills and a transformative culture, we help business owners not only increase their company's market value but also achieve the personal freedom they deserve.
As we move forward, our messaging will increasingly focus on how strategic business planning and value enhancement go hand in hand. The ultimate goal is to turn SMEs into self-sustaining entities that are attractive on the market and liberating for their owners. Embracing this perspective now can lead to more lucrative and fulfilling outcomes down the line, ensuring that your hard work today pays off in the future.
In conclusion, the biggest mistake a business owner can make is neglecting the long-term value of their enterprise. By looking beyond the immediate and preparing your business for tomorrow, you're not just surviving; you're thriving. Make strategic business value enhancement a priority, building companies that stand the test of time while allowing their owners to step back and enjoy the rewards of their efforts
