Amazing how things in life swing around.

This view, taken earlier this week, was similar to one I had in 2009, when I was in the process of returning from Brisbane to take on a new role in Auckland.

The view may be similar; the circumstances are so different.

In a different industry, in a different capacity and for different reasons. Weirdly, our new Auckland office is directly opposite (literally) the same office I "lived" at for several years. The same suburb, the same street, the same vibes, but very different.

Anyway, it has been great catching up with our Auckland team, continuing to support them as we continue to grow.

While I am not returning to Auckland permanently, it got me thinking. What scenarios do we experience where things seem very familiar but are actually so different?

What actually happens when you engage with an insurance adviser like me?

You don't get a 45-minute insurance lecture! 😂

I start with you:
* What's changed?
* What are you trying to protect?
* What financial commitments do you have?
* What do you already have in place (if anything)?

Only then do we look at providers, products and solutions.

Good advice isn't about finding products and solutions and fitting you into them. It's about understanding you first, then creating a solution around your circumstances.

So when we talk, you're not just buying insurance. We work to make a complicated part of your financial life simpler and clearer.

We insure the house, the car, our contents...

If we own a business, we insure the property, the plant, the inventory...

The challenge?

Most people don't insure the one thing that enables you to buy the house, the car, the contents or the ability to build or buy a business which has plant and inventory...

YOU!

Here's my question: If something happens to you, what happens to all of the above?

Don't know? Let's chat!

It has been just over a week since attending the AIA Summit in Auckland. It has been great having some time to digest everything from a jam-packed couple of days.

Ian Jones and this team took us through the All Blacks Experience, learning about the history of the jersey. Frances Valintine CNZM shared her insights on the challenges ahead with an ageing population. Nick Stanhope discussed what our destination could look like, and where he sees things going in the future with Biswa Prakash Misra.

Jonathan Beale Ben Lovelock Maddison Sherlock talked about all things AIA, including new solutions coming to market. David Farrar shared his thought-provoking views on the current political race, finishing off with Cameron George sharing the amazing turnaround with the Warriors and the challenges with running a team and operation through COVID.

This was expertly MC'ed by Scotty Stevenson, with Matt Heath providing some great laughs to top off a full agenda.

My highlight, though, had to be Jason Gunn and his presentation around connection. A couple of years ago, I spent time with him as one of his "students" in one of his sessions, and it reminded me of the power of his knowledge and his skill, as well as the value of storytelling (the photo with Jason was taken at the time in his course).

I think the group photo of some of our team sums up the value of connection as we continue to grow, sharing the good times and the challenges Jordan Clemence James Dalzell Jay Nam

Is AI going to be there for you when things go wrong? Is it personally liable if it gives poor or misleading advice?

AI can be useful to some extent. It can provide general information and help you understand some of the basics around insurance.

But AI only knows what you ask it and what you tell it, i.e., its prompts. It will keep you happy and generally not disagree with your request.

A good adviser asks the questions you didn’t know needed asking, challenges assumptions and understands the person behind the numbers.

Because when you’re sick, injured, grieving or trying to make a claim, insurance becomes very personal, very quickly.

AI can give you information. A good advisor can give you advice and be there when you actually need it.

A couple of years ago, a business colleague described me as “fastidious.”

At first I laughed, then wondered, "Is this a compliment or criticism?"

So naturally, I looked it up.

Turns out: Very attentive to detail, concerned about accuracy, methodical and meticulous.

Okay. Guilty as charged.

I know I can be a pain about the details. I ask questions. I double-check things. I challenge information when something doesn’t quite add up, and occasionally, I probably spend far too long worrying about something most people wouldn’t even notice.

But when it comes to your insurance and KiwiSaver, I think that’s exactly the person you want in your corner.

Because a small detail today can become a pretty big detail when you’re making a claim, planning your future, or talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So yes… I’m fastidious.

And I’ve decided I’m keeping it.

We share a lot online without thinking about who might be reading it or how that information could be used.

It’s a little different when I’m helping clients with KiwiSaver and insurance. I need to understand your finances, family and goals to give you appropriate advice, and that information is shared for a reason.

So, my highly technical cybersecurity advice:

* Dog photos? Absolutely.
* What you had for dinner? Sure.
* Why you do what you do and how you help people? Of course.
* Personal information that helps strangers join the dots? Maybe not.

Share wisely online. Share intentionally with people you trust.

I've developed a highly sophisticated system for dealing with jobs I don't really want to do.

I leave them for "Future Kyle".

"Future Kyle" is apparently more organised, has more spare time and, judging by the number of jobs I've given him. He's an incredibly capable bloke!

Unfortunately, people do the same thing with their financial planning.

'I really should review my insurance.'
'I should probably check my KiwiSaver.'
'I'll get around to it one day.'

The problem is, life doesn't always wait for future you.

Health changes. Families change. Financial goals change.

My job is to make those conversations simple and make sure your insurance and KiwiSaver still fit where you're heading.

Future you may thank you...

Last week, I posted what I thought was a great piece of content on social media. It had a clear message, a professional image, and I was expecting it to generate some good conversations.

The response wasn't what I expected.

It was a timely reminder that assumptions don't always match reality.

I see the same thing when talking with clients about their financial wellbeing.

Many assume their personal risk insurance still suits their needs, or that their KiwiSaver is on the right track, simply because they haven't had a reason to question it.

The truth is, life changes. Your family, career, income and goals evolve over time, so it's worth making sure your financial plans evolve with them.

A simple review can replace assumptions with confidence and help ensure you're protecting what matters most while staying on track for the future.

When was the last time you reviewed your insurance or KiwiSaver?

Two insurance policies can look almost identical.

- Similar premium
- Similar cover amount
- Similar brochure

But when you look at the details, the differences can be significant.

One policy may include benefits that help you get back on your feet after illness or injury. Another may have exclusions or limitations that only become obvious when it's time to make a claim.

That's why I don't just compare premiums. I compare what really matters.

The cheapest option isn't always the best value, especially when your family's financial future is on the line.

If it's been a few years since you reviewed your personal risk insurance or you arranged it online because it seemed easy, it might be worth asking one simple question:

"Does my cover still do what I think it does?"

Sometimes a review confirms you've got great cover. Sometimes it uncovers opportunities to better protect what matters most.
