What makes a leadership partnership successful?

Trust
Commitment
A genuine desire to keep growing.

That’s why my work with Evolve Education Group over the past five years has been so rewarding.

A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to speak at their annual conference in Auckland. It was a great opportunity to share key insights, strategies, and lessons that have emerged from working with leaders.

It was also a chance to reflect on what has been a successful partnership and to share practical leadership learnings with a wider audience.

A special thanks to Kate Ogston-Cornish and all the leaders I’ve had the privilege of working with.

Your openness, commitment to growth, and willingness to invest in your leadership have made this journey really worthwhile.

It’s been a win-win partnership, and I’m grateful to have been part of it.

Most difficult conversations don't fail in the moment.

They fail in the preparation.

Over the years, I've seen plenty of "open to learning" conversations that missed the mark.

Leaders go in believing they're ready, only for the conversation to fall apart or fail to land because they haven't thought through the approach.

On Friday, I coached a leader who needs to have a conversation with one of his team members sooner rather than later.

There were two significant issues he knew he needed to address.

He was committed to having the conversation, but wasn't completely clear on how to navigate it.

As we worked through the situation, it became clear what he needed to do before the conversation, how he needed to show up during it, and what actions would be important afterwards.

He left with:
Clarity on what needed to be said
Confidence in how to say it
Commitment to follow through

Could AI have helped him prepare some talking points?

Probably.

But coaching gave him something different.

A space to think.

A chance to challenge his assumptions.

The confidence to step into a difficult conversation with purpose rather than hope for the best.

That's the power of coaching.

Great catching up with Brenda Martin and Sarah Martin during a work trip last week.

I always learn so much from these two, not just as phenomenal leaders, but as awesome human beings.

We share a common purpose: helping others grow and become the best versions of themselves, especially in the education space.

Grateful to have them both in my corner (and part of my tribe!).

What helps great leaders grow?

Having the space to stop, reflect, and keep learning both with others and on their own.

One of the best parts of my job over the last 6 years has been working alongside school principals and supporting them to become the best version of themselves.

This week I caught up with Chris Nord, Tumuaki of Lincoln Primary School in Selwyn, to reflect on his leadership learning over the past 12 months.

Lincoln is in one of the fastest-growing and most innovative regions in New Zealand, and Chris is doing an incredible job leading through that growth.

What stands out most is that there’s zero ego.

No “look at me” leadership.

Just someone who genuinely wants to keep getting better and is deeply committed to improving his staff, learners, and community.

Watching leaders like Chris continue to take their practice and their teams from good to great is pretty inspiring.

Moments like this are a big reminder of why I enjoy what I do.

“Do you miss being a principal?”

I get asked this a lot.

While I really valued the connection with students, staff, and the wider community, the honest answer is no.

Leaving six years ago was one of the biggest professional risks I’ve taken.

At the time, I knew I had achieved what I set out to do as a principal, and I also knew staying simply because it felt safe wasn’t the right reason to remain.

Today, I feel really fortunate to support and coach organisational leaders across New Zealand and overseas.

Last week, I caught up with Nic Walker, a passionate principal making a real impact in the Marlborough region.

Conversations like that remind me how important courageous leadership is, especially when stepping into the unknown.

Career risks are rarely comfortable.

But backing yourself, trying a new direction, and moving forward without regrets is definitely worth it!

One of the key realisations I’ve had as a coach ….

The biggest challenge for many leaders isn’t a lack of capability.

It’s recognising they don’t have to carry everything on their own.

Leadership can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also feel pretty lonely at times, especially when the pressure, expectations, and constant change keep piling up.

What I’ve learned through coaching is that most leaders aren’t looking for someone to “fix” them.

More often, they just need a space to talk things through openly with someone who understands the realities of leadership because they’ve been there too.

That’s where I feel my strength as a coach really lies.

Creating a genuine, high-trust space where leaders can be real, think clearly, feel supported, and leave with more confidence and clarity about how they move forward.

“If only I’d handled that situation differently…”

I’ve been coaching some leaders lately around the day-to-day challenges they’re navigating:

Team friction
Underperformance
Staff feeling stressed and overwhelmed
Constant change and uncertainty
Having difficult conversations they’ve been avoiding

And honestly, it’s tough.

When there are so many competing priorities, it can be really hard to stay calm and respond well in the moment.

I remember plenty of times in leadership when I couldn’t see the wood for the trees.

One strategy that keeps coming up in conversations is the importance of creating space before responding instead of immediately reacting.

The 24-hour rule can be useful.

Not every issue needs an instant answer.

Giving yourself time and space to think through the options often leads to a far better response

And usually a better outcome, too.

Simple? Yes.

Easy? Not always.

Effective? 100%

What impact is my behaviour having on our organisation?

It’s a simple question, but an important one every leader and every team member should be asking regularly.

We all know that helpful behaviours drive healthy outcomes, stronger relationships, and better results.

On the flip side, unhelpful behaviours can quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) limit progress and hold teams back.

When I’m working with leaders, I often introduce them to a simple visual to help bring this into focus.

It allows them to get clear around the behaviours that support a healthy, high-performing culture and, just as importantly, the ones that need to be addressed or let go of.

Because culture isn’t built on intention alone.

It’s shaped by what we consistently say and do.

Working with committed clients changes everything.

It’s great to be partnering with Sandy Hastings this year to support the Senior Leadership Team at Swannanoa School here in Canterbury.

Together, we’re co-designing a bespoke leadership programme tailored specifically to their needs

Not a one-size-fits-all approach.

My focus is on helping leaders deepen their self-awareness and effectiveness through the meaningful use of DiSC data, both individually and collectively.

Alongside this, Sandy is strengthening the capability of their Middle Leaders to build a more cohesive leadership pipeline.

What stands out most?

This team’s openness to challenge, their willingness to reflect, and their genuine commitment to growth.

That’s where real leadership development happens.

Over the last few days, I’ve been working on a keynote for an education conference in Auckland next month.

It’s not something I usually put my hand up for, but this one matters.

I’ve spent the past five years coaching and working alongside leaders in this organisation.

This feels like a chance to step back and ask a simple question:

What actually makes a difference?

The answer isn’t groundbreaking. It’s the small, consistent leadership practices that show up in the day-to-day:

– how conversations are handled
– how clarity is created
– how people are supported and challenged

The things that don’t always get attention but always seem to land.

I was also reminded of the Pareto Principle (80/20 rule) last week, the idea that a small number of actions drive most of the impact.

That feels especially true for leadership.

Still shaping the talk, but it’s been a useful reminder:

Focus less on doing more and more on doing what matters most!
