The second instalment in our 'what aviation can teach the rest of us about decision making' series. The ANCA model (aviate-navigate-communicate-administrate) sets a clear priority hierarchy for pilots, signalling the order in which tasks can be dropped as the workload and stress levels increase. The clear instruction here is that the pilot's primary responsibility is to keep flying the plane during any emergency. The hard-won lesson being that many crashes have resulted from pilots making radio calls, trying to read a map, or dealing with cockpit alarms, when they should have been focused on keeping the plane straight and level.

Now think about what the mission critical tasks are in your industry, and derive a way to remind your team to focus on those when everything turns In Merdam Verti. If you're in marketing this might be as simple as Gareth O'Connor's notion (chanelling James Carville) that "it's the customer stupid".

At The Curiosity Company we do a lot of training and consulting about how executives and organisations can make smarter decisions. Working on decision-making allows us to dip into our social science bag of tricks but it also lets me draw deeply on my aviation experience. Aviation is a wonderful example for other industries because of how deeply committed it is to learning from its errors; how mistakes are (mostly) seen as having systemic causes rather than culprits; and how it methodically makes use of decision aids such as checklists and Crew Resource Management tools. The higher the stakes in your industry the more you'll have to learn from how aviation decision-making manages risk, reduces human error, and maintains safety under intense pressure. Plus, they get the best lines too. Even if no-one really says 'negative Ghost rider, the pattern is full'.
